Healthcare Reform

Before this turns into a debate of whether you're against it or not, that's not what I'm looking for in this thread... I will say I am against it and leave it at that.

What I'm specifically looking for is some facts...based on real people...and not just a bunch of skewed statistics...to help me better understand some things.

So this is the question I leave you with...

For those of you who currently have healthcare coverage, how will the passage of this bill affect that? Please don't give me opinions based on what you've heard... but rather...what has your work/healthcare provider informed you of in regards to coverage/pricing changes?

What I'm trying to determine is how many of the "average Joe's" are getting the shaft when it comes to the new "affordable" healthcare reform.

For example, I asked my dad this very question earlier today...my dad works in middle management for a decent sized manufacturing company. He says his coverage will not change one bit...BUT...he has been informed that he is going to have to pay more for it with the passage of the new bill.

I appreciate you input in this thread...please, try not to turn it into an all out brawl over whether you agree/disagree with the bill passing.

There are 18 immediate impacts of this health bill, listed below. I'm not getting into political discussions here either, but most of this is Insurance Company reform. I would like to point out that recent rhetoric makes it sound like Health Care Reform is maybe a bigger deal than it really is.

1. Insurance companies can no longer cut someone when he or she gets sick.

2. Health Insurers cannot deny children health insurance because of pre-existing conditions. A ban on the discrimination in adults will take effect in 2014.

3. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees will get tax credits covering up to 50% of employee premiums.

4. Seniors will get a rebate to fill the so-called "donut hole" in Medicare drug coverage, which severely limits prescription medication coverage expenditures over $2,700. As of next year, 50 percent of the donut hole will be filled.

5. The cut-off age for young adults to continue to be covered by their parents' health insurance rises to the age 27.

6. Lifetime caps on the amount of insurance an individual can have will be banned. Annual caps will be limited, and banned in 2014.

7. A temporary high-risk pool will be set up to cover adults with pre-existing conditions. Health care exchanges will eliminate the program in 2014.

8. New plans must cover checkups and other preventative care without co-pays. All plans will be affected by 2018

9. Insurers must now reveal how much money is spent on overhead.

10. Any new plan must now implement an appeals process for coverage determinations and claims.

11. This tax will impose a ten percent tax on indoor tanning services. This tax, which replaced the proposed tax on cosmetic surgery, would be effective for services on or after July 1, 2010.

12. New screening procedures will be implemented to help eliminate health insurance fraud and waste.

13. Medicare payment protections will be extended to small rural hospitals and other health care facilities that have a small number of Medicare patients.

14. Non-profit Blue Cross organizations will be required to maintain a medical loss ratio -- money spent on procedures over money incoming -- of 85 percent or higher to take advantage of IRS tax benefits

15. Chain restaurants will be required to provide a "nutrient content disclosure statement" alongside their items. Expect to see calories listed both on in-store and drive-through menus of fast-food restaurants sometime soon.

16. The bill establishes a temporary program for companies that provide early retiree health benefits for those ages 55‐64 in order to help reduce the often-expensive cost of that coverage.

17. The Secretary of Health and Human Services will set up a new Web site to make it easy for Americans in any state to seek out affordable health insurance options The site will also include helpful information for small businesses.

18. A two‐year temporary credit (up to a maximum of $1 billion) is in the bill to encourage investment in new therapies for the prevention and treatement of diseases.

Something tells me that Nancy had some special pull regarding #11

As far as the question presented . . . too soon to tell. I have discounted benefits offered thru my employer (Kaiser) . . . not sure what the result of this will be, but I've yet to see the costs go down so my uneducated guess would have to be that my rates will go up again.

If anybody has dealt with the VA or Indian Health that is what's coming, rationed health care. When was the last time a government program has broke even, let alone made money (lower the deficiect)? What does the IRS know about running health care? The IRS will be hiring 16,000+ new employees just to cover healthcare enforcement. Step back, look around the world. Where does the world come for medical treatment, not to Canada, England, Austriala or France, they come to the US where we didn't use to have socialized medicne until now.

In a matter of years our healthcare will be the version of Canada's. Poor treatment and long waiting lists.

Fact: 50% die from heart disease, 49% die from cancer, 1% die from other causes.

Fact: No matter how much we spend, we all end up in the same place. Keep it in perspective people!

Fact: If you watch the news, read the paper, discuss online, and get stressed out over it bad enough to get a heart attack, it won't change the law one bit!

Sorry to be negative, but so many people are acting like this is the end of everything, when that just isn't true.

Believe it or not, I've actually had great luck with the VA in both Long Beach, CA and in Wichita, KS. Knock on wood........

Did I tell you that the VA is paying for 100% of my flight school through Vocational Rehab? I'm stoked.....

There is a greatness in this health care and there is a negative to it too. Just like everything in life. BTW you and me as tax payers already pay for people who don't have health care. No they just put it on paper. Yes your going to pay more. I am going to pay more, can I afford to really pay more NO but I will I move on by it yes. Could i afford when our last president screwed us (me) no but I pushed threw it. Life is a matter of perspective, you can always make more money. So live with it and move on.

If you haven't gotten more out of the insurance company than you deserve, then you haven't screwed them nearly as much as they have been screwing you for the past xx years.

i havent been informed how this will affect me yet but i cant imagine its going to go down... i think some people out there that are for this reform think they are going to get free healthcare and that is just not what is going to happen.

this new reform will not only make it "affordable" to all americans and extend coverage to those who currently cant get it... but it will also force all americans to have insurance, meaning you have no option now. you have an option of what coverage you want to pay for (which will most likely be higher than what you currently pay) and you have the option of opting out, but you still have to pay the government for this option (i understand that its close to $1000 a year for no issurance)

dont get me started on how the government will carry out this plan... like almost all the "plans" government has we will pay for it whether it be with new taxes, fees, or with our time and agrevation...

Here's a Fact for you regarding Cardiac and Cancer deaths...

Medicare cut cardiac and oncology payback by roughly 50% this year. Since that more than a few cardiologists have closed up shop, and others have stopped taking medicare (mayo clinic for one). The largest hit was a field known as Nuclear Medicine. It includes things like Nuclear stress tests (the best non-invasive way to see if someone needs a stent or bypass), and PET scans (very common scan in oncology, used for staging, and locating of CA.). These are expensive tests, as the radioactive material is not from the US. (we have no reactors for it). and some of the reactors have had to shut down due to age, and poor maintenance. The costs keep going up, however the payment to the docs is going down. if this continues, do you really think cardiologists and Oncologists will continue to practice when being paid like teachers?

I'm a cardiology nurse. I deal with this crap. If you want to talk facts I'm more than willing.
Opinion: The Gov't having control over something as critical as healthcare is not a good idea.

When it involves your lively hood, in which you went to school for years to become it is a big deal. Keep your head in the sand, you'll be just fine.

My letter to the Robin hood Gov't we have.

Dear Gov't, I am not rich. Stop stealing from me. I'm broke enough without your greedy little hands in my pockets.

Oh, and my Sister said you never called her after last weekend.

I'll say two things; First, Nobody has read it so nobody knows what it will do for you or anyone, Second; If it is so great, why did the Prez, Congress and Senate exempt themselves from it? Ok three things, Vote any Congresscritter out of office that voted for this unwanted monstrosity!
