How's the injury healing, my friend? You getting back up to speed? Gotta hitch in your get-along?

It's going pretty good, actually. Just Monday I was told that I was no longer having to rely on that walking boot. (Which is nice to know considering I wasn't using it all that often ) The Orthopedic Surgeon who did the surgery said that everything inside the leg/ankle/foot/toes that were damaged have now healed. Good news!!! I was glad to hear that!! He's certain that with roughly 3 more months of physical therapy to get my range of motion back, I should be able to be put back into a regular unit. Before I deployed, I was promised choice of duty station, so now the biggest problem I'm faced with is choosing where I want to be stationed. Sniper slots aren't too common, so that will definately limit my choices. I haven't pulled a trigger on a government long gun since March, but I've been keeping up with personal training and my personal guns. The next 3 months are going to be rough. I need to get back up to speed on my running and rucking. I can only take about two steps in a light jog before having to stop because of the pain. I walk on a treadmill every night for at least 2 miles, usually 3 or 4. It's really helping out with getting that leg back to being able to walk without a limp. Soon I'll be jogging, then running. I'm stoked that they didn't have to fuse any of the bones together. I'm surprised they didn't, it was really a mess down there!!! Anyways, I'm motivated (that was never an issue), and I'm excited about being closer to being able to do the job that I love again. Here are the 3 top choices I have for my next duty station.....
1. Schweinfurt, Germany with the 172nd Infantry
2. Fort Carson, Colorado with the 4th ID
2. Fort Wainwright, Alaska with the 1/24 Infantry

Thanks, it's funny....I was thinking about writing up an update, but didn't know if many people would even know what I was talking about. You read my mind!!! Thanks for your concern, Chris!!

Fantastic Cavey, I'm glad to hear it. Everytime I see your location on your posts I wonder how you're doing. I know it's killing you to have to be idle like this and it's good to know you'll be getting back to full speed soon. Congrats.

Oh, I forgot to mention this in my last post. They're done with the investigations and I'm now free to say what happened. I just can't say where it happened. If you know the geography of FAR eastern Afghanistan, you'll know why.

We were on a convoy to drop off my sniper team and another sniper team to our OPs for an overwatch of an operation I'm not allowed to name. We almost ALWAYS chopper in, but this time we motored in and were ambushed by a VBIED. (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device) (Carbomb). It was an unoccupied green Toyota 4-door pickup (they're everywhere in Afghanistan). It was set up with a command detonation device that allowed the bomber to set off the bomb from the relative safety of a nearby shack. The truck was parked on the side of the road in between two other trucks and didn't look out of the ordinary until it went off......right next to the Humvee I was in. It blew our truck up and I was thrown about 60 feet (they say). I was in the turret with the .50 cal, but since I had the Pope Glass on the turret, I was spared the shrapnel to the face, instead I was thrown from the vehicle and woke up as they were putting me on the bird that I should have been on in the first place. The Humvee was trashed and the occupants all received injuries.....I'm not allowed to elaborate on their injuries, sorry. That about sums it up. The Taliban has good intel. We always sell them short, but they're well informed. They probably knew we were going to take that route before it was even handed down to the teams. It all could have been avoided if we had just stuck to our normal SOP and taken the bird. Ok, I guess that's about it. I can answer alot more questions now than I could after it first happened, so if anyone has any questions, I'll answer them if I can.

Where are you recovering at these days?

In case you missed it, Tiny has a monster living in her home that REALLY needs a large caliber attitude adjustment!

Good to hear you are back on the path to continuing the reassignment of terrorist dirtbags to eternal dirtnap status!

Of the 3 units you are considering requesting assignment to, are any deploying to the same area you were in before?

I'm at Fort Riley right now. They placed me here to recover since I requested it. My parents live about an hour and a half from Fort Riley, so it's good to be near them. I haven't lived in Kansas since the 90's. I don't miss it!!

Yeah, I know about Benny the War Kitteh. I'm a cat-lover as well as a dog-lover, so Benny has a Get Out Of Jail Free card with me.

As for the units, I'm not sure if/when any of them are deploying anywhere near where I was. I hope so. I'd like to get in one last deployment before passing on the torch, and I'd like it to be in a REALLY target-rich environment like the last one. It was estimated that my little camp in Afghanistan had 20,000 Taliban living around it. I have my doubts about that high of a number, but we certainly had more than our fair share of violence directed at us. It kept us on our toes, though, and we just looked at it this way........bold terrorists make bold mistakes and are easier to identify and isolate/eliminate.

Glad to hear you're doing better, My nephew has video of one (Humvee behind him was filming) of his road side bomb encounters. He's had three of them. If yours was like that it makes you wonder how anybody can survive.

Glade to hear your doing better Cave. If I was picking from that list, it would really be a hard choice. I would have to say I would go Alaska, Colorado, Germany though

This is probably a really dumb question, but do you have regular internet access when you get deployed over into the middle east? I have a few friends over there, but my best bud is doing VIP security in the Marines, and it would be nice if I could get his address and send him and his buddies some stuff.

Thanks, things are looking pretty good. Where I go depends on where they can fit me in. Those are the 3 choices I've handed up. We'll see what happens. That's the Army's version of "choice of duty station"!!

As for regular internet access......it really depends on where you're based over there. When I first got in-country, I was staged for inprocessing at a place that was like a small town....almost a mega-FOB. We had great internet access there. Then I was sent to a couple of SMALL camps where I had very limited internet access. Of course, I spent very little time at the camp.....really only there for re-supply and the occasional shower. We spent most of our time dressed as locals since we were embedded. Got to grow beards, eat local food.....fart local farts. All the luxuries of living in a 3rd-world country. Some places have all the amenities, while most of the smaller camps don't really have much. We had a closet with books in it we called the library. The closest PX was a 45 minute ride complete with suicide bombers and landmines and red-bearded black turban wearing locals. Good times!!

Its good to hear that youre on the right way.

When do you know where you will be stationed? After your physical therapy?
Please tell me if you go to Schweinfurt. Im about 30 miles from there once or twice a month. Perhaps we could meet and go wheeling together.

btw. where are you at the moment? Still in a hospital n Germany? Or at home in the US?

I won't know where I'll be stationed unti I get a clean bill of health (RTD....return to duty). I'll definately let you know if I get to Schweinfurt. I spent three days in Ramstein and Landstuhl waiting for a plane home to the States and got a chance to take a bus ride around the area. I loved it. My taste of Germany was very small, but I was impressed with it enough to request a transfer there!! You have a very pretty country, Nico. I hope to be there before the first of the year. I think that's a very attainable goal.
