History On the Move!

Union Pacific is moving its "Big Boy" 4014 restoration project from California to Wyoming. It stopped in Las Vegas yesterday, and this is the short video of the largest steam locomotive ever built when it visited Las Vegas on its way "home" in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Never did see this engine while it was here in California. There is something very specific about trains that you just can't experience otherwise.

A few years ago I rode Amtrak from Washington, D.C. to Emeryville/Oakland, CA. It was an amazing time. Even modern trains evoke a sense of history, connection with what used to be a main means of traveling long distances before the advent of the car and interstate highway system.

Is that the one that was at the Sacramento railroad museum? If so, I've seen it.. impressive bit of machinery.

Awesome that it still works!

whoops.. bummer... I watched the video I see it's taking the trip of shame... pulled/pushed by diesel electrics... I guess after restoration it should be under it's own power....that'll be extra impressive!
