I Just Don't Know What To Say About This One!!!

Workers at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no longer have a paid day off on Labor Day but will instead be granted the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr.

According to a news release from the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, a new 5-year contract at the plant included the change to accommodate Muslim workers at the plant.

Tyson's director of media relations Gary Mickelson said the contract includes eight paid holidays, the same number as the old contract.

Eid al-Fitr, which falls on Oct. 1 this year, marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. Union leaders say implementing the holiday was important for the nearly 700 Muslims, many of them Somalis, who work at the plant that employs a total of 1,200 people.

While I have nothing against the Muslim workers getting a holiday, one should not be taken from the others.

We were talking about this at work today. Even the people I work with that either A. don't usually care about political type things, or B. are strictly liberal to the bone, still couldn't believe Tyson did that. Why couldn't they just add that as another holiday, or give ALL the employees a "floating holiday" so ALL religions could take advantage?

I also give 20 huge thumbs up with all of my fingers and toes for a September 11th day of remembrance.

You all act so surprised by what is taking place. Tyson, as well as many others, are only making it safe, for our new muslim future president, to feel right at home. Is it now only starting to repulse you?

Yes it is. Right here in good ol Arcansaw.

Heck, I didn't even know we had that many Muslims in one place in Arcansaw.

If Tyson changed it over to a pork processing plant, maybe the need for the change would go away???!!!

Its really pretty simple 1200 workers 700 of which are Muslims....They voted on it as a Union and the majority won...Nothing could be more American that a democratic vote....I know a guy whos Union had Tater Day(a local festival) as a paid holiday...they traded it later for a dental plan....holiday trading at a Union Shop happens all the time ...this made news cause its a muslim holiday thats all there is to it nothin more nothing less....Gary

The Tyson rep that was on Fox News tonight said that there were about 250 muslim workers at the plant that employs 1200. Whatever the reason for the union going in the direction they did, Tyson will pay the price. Many people in Arkansas are saying they are through with buying from Tyson. Their record for hiring illegals stinks and now this hits the news. Sometimes the unions can bargain their members right out of a place to work.

No Gary, people are upset because an American holiday that has been around since 1800s just got thrown out the window for a SINGLE religious holiday. Labor day was created as a day of rest for the working man, and most Americans use that day as their family reunions. Instead of giving them a floating holiday so that ANY religion can have a day off on an important day of their own, they decided to ditch the long standing American holiday.

You mean the way President's Day moved and became Martin Luther King Day? No, of course there's no past precedent. Given the near-total evisceration of unions in this country, I've thought that "Labor Day" has been ironic for decades now.
