If you play with fire your going to get burned

Id just like to remind everyone how dangerous fire is i have been an avid backpacker for 12 years and i got a little to foolhardy thinking i knew everything about stoves. I have now found that is most definitely not true, be careful check your equipment, and always have a buddy i have really bad second degree burns all over my right hand a small second degree burn on my left hand and my face is covered with small first degree and my hair is singed

Holy crap....what happened? I'm sure there's a valuable lesson here somewhere. I teach the stoves & fuels module for a BSA High Adventure training team so curious.

I was checking an msr white gas stove to see if it worked and the base plate fell off spewing gas everywhere and then a spark ignited the gas already burning me and then i disconnected the pressurized fuel tank which was a very bad idea spewing gas all over my hand also igniting that which caused me to drop the tank sending the fuel everywhere fortunately there was a very large outdoor mat close by and it was a concrete surface so i managed to get the fire patted out before anything was damaged

Damn. Sorry to hear about. Hope the mending goes well. Certainly glad it wasn't any worse! Love the Whisperlite but yes they can be finicky to say the least. A little PM at home before lighting goes a long way.

Sorry to hear, use propane !!

This may help your situation-

Guy jumps out of plane at 25,000 ft-

Pulls ripcord-no chute !

Pull safety cord-no chute !

Gets down to about 1000 ft and meets a guy, going up !!

He says-"hey you know anything about parachutes" ??

Guy says "Nope, you know anything about gas stoves"??

Sorry to hear about your burn. That is one thing that really scares me.
We had a nurse from a burn ward do a seminar at our firehouse years ago and I will never forget the pics she brought with her.
I will be extra careful next time camping with my Whisper or Coleman stoves.

I teach Scouts outdoor skills, camping, cooking, etc....and unless I missed a rule change, liquid fuel stoves, fires, etc. are a definite no-no for Scouts. Is there an allowance to this for high adventure scouts? I'm out of the loop on getting up to date information...
and for your burns, did they give you silverdine (silvadene?) ointment? Can't remember exact spelling...but my older son had 2nd & 3rd degree burns at 1 year old over 20% and we had to paste that stuff on him for weeks...great stuff!

Yeah i pretty much got a case of the stuff its pretty great, and this wasnt a trip for scouting so we were allowed to have them for scouting and for high adventure you are allowed to use liquid gas stoves in bsa

ouch that looks like it hurts. I got second degree burns on the middle section of my left 4 fingers and that hurt pretty darm good. I was at Sea Base camping on an island for a week and stupid me decided it would be a good idea to pour a large bucket of water on a fire to put it out. The steam cooked my fingers instantly. I just had to make do with burn ointment for the last 3 days in the sun plus the 6 mile row across the ocean back to Florida. Yeah that was an adventure lol. Anyways I hope it heals soon burns are the worst. Just wait till the skin underneath heals and the dead skin on top starts peeling off in sheets....fun. My blisters popped on mine so I would use neo sporin and gauze during the day and let it air out at night. Healed reasonably within 2 weeks with pretty much no scarring. Just a little pink hue due to the new skin. The human body is really amazing.
