So in the next pic was the snake eating the dear? That's a freaking huge snake for Arkansas. We have a place on Beaver Lake in NW Arkansas and in 20 years I've never seen any snakes like that on our acreage. Damn I hate snakes.

I'm not an expert in herpetology, and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I suspect that is not a native snake. Most likely someone's pet that got away. I suspect that he/she won't make it through the winter.

Wouldn't have made it another minute if I had been standing there. I would've put one right between it's eyes. I wonder if that deer saw or smelt it there? Didn't look like it bothered it in the least.

The deer probably knew it was there and didn't care. Not big enough to be a threat. The same reason they don't run from squirrels.

On a side note, I was in a haunted house one year when suddenly all the lights came on and this guy came over a horn (it was formerly a store and they put up a bunch of little fake walls) that one of the snakes escaped one of the cages. I looked down and a snake nearly that big was crawling over my boot. I thought I was going to lose it...

That really looks like a timber rattlesnake to me. Of course, the shape of the head makes all the difference and I can't make it out. Also, a snake that size should have a nice set of rattles, but you can't depend on that always. I've seen one or two over the years that had no rattles.

The way the head looks makes you think it is not in the viper family of snakes.

I showed the picture to a guy I work with that is into snakes and he thinks its a Boa. I thought so also. Kind of hard to keep those critters on a leash! Griz

So do you concur that since it is a tropical snake that it probably won't make it through the winter?

I was at the pet store the other day and I found a leash for birds. I guess its kinda like flying a kite. I didn't see any for snakes though.

That depends. If it dens up and its a mild winter it could make it. But I think its days are numbered. Snakes being cold blooded wil go inactive when the temp drops low enough but I don't know if one from a tropical area would have the instinct to den up for the winter.I know they are surviving in the wild in Florida and I can remember some cold days when i lived there.

Yeah, it does seem to be a boa. I looked up some shots on google. I have no idea if it can live through a winter or not. Probably would be best if not, since it has no natural predators. Although, I don't think they need to eat very often....
