Jersey Accents: North Vs. South

Contrary to popular belief there are actually 2 types of New Jersey accents. North and South.

A north jersey accent usually ahs short "a's": call-> cawl, dog-> dawg, ball-> ball.

in south jersey syllables are often elongated: home-> hoe-m, water-> wudder, also it's a crick not a creek, "on the road becomes "onna road".

reguardless of where in jersey you live though, you always go "down the shore" never to the beach.

Both of the female accents I like are on the East Coast. You can't beat a girl with a Jersey/New York accent or a girl with a nice southern drawl.

Born in Morris County, lived in Passaic, Bergen and lastly Monmouth County (which is considered south Jersey by north Jersey standards). I know exactly what you're talking about. An interesting side note, I believe the mason dixon line did cut across Cape May county so that adds a little twist to perceptions.

What exit are you? (ha, ha)...

I would totally agree, I miss that Bergen county - NY metropolitan accent... But I get plenty of it here in the Poconos considering most people are NYC and NJ translplants.

And yes, Jersey girls are tough as nails.

I like talking to the female vendors I have from Maryand and New York. Don't have any in New Jersey though. What's funny is even though I'm in SOuth Carolina, some vendors can still tell I'm from Texas and not here. Cowboy till I die!

well let see. born in middlesex county (central jersey) and we moved to hunterdon county (still central jersey, kind of a lateral movement i guess) when i was 6. 17 years later i still live in hunterdon county. when you live in central jersey you sort of pick up a little of both. I drink cawfee, throw a bawl, and play with my dawg (so im told), i go down the shore, i call 'em hoagies, not heros, and i HATE all things Yankees, Jets, and Rangers. I eat pork roll not taylor ham. There sprinkles not jimmies damnit. And I'll take an italian ice over a "wudder ice" any day.

i just took this quiz and i'm 79% jersey!!!Results: How New Jersey Are You?

You Might Be From New Jersey IF:

1. You refer to the beach as the shore.
2. You know what a Wawa is, and you know the location of at least 15 of them.
3. You don't understand why there aren't more 24-hour diners elsewhere in the country.
4. You can name all the flavors of salt water taffy.
5. You've run out of money on the Parkway.
6. You still haven't seen that many gardens.
7. You still can't believe MTV went to Seaside Heights.
8. There are no self serve gas stations.
9. You know what a "jug handle" is.
10. You only go to the "City" for day trips.
11. Route 18 doesn't freak you out at night.
12. You believe the Statue of Liberty is in NJ.
13. You don't take any shit from anybody especially people from New York and Philly, because you live here for christ's sake and just who the hell do they think they are anyway? Invading our beaches and bars, they are just here for the damn summer and they think they own the damn place.
14. At least three people in your family still listen to Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen and actually seen him play with the E-Street band in the Stone Pony down in Asbury.
15. You know Paramus has 4 major malls within 3 miles of each other.
16. You have mandatory recycling enforced by law.
17. You've pondered, "Maybe basketball would be more popular in NJ if the Nets didn't blow."
18. In high school you worked at Friendly's.
19. You've spent St. Patrick's day in Belmar.
20. You have nearly been run over by a Tram Car in Wildwood.
21. You have a grandparent who didn't move to Florida and retired in Cape May, Ocean Grove, Brick, or Toms River.
22. Donald Trump is mentioned daily in your local newspaper.
23. Your school actually made good Iitalian"hoagies."
24. The Jets/Giants game has started fights in your family.
25. You have been waiting the last 10 years for the Yankees to move to the Meadowlands.
26. You can smell when it's low tide.
27. You own an annual pass to Great Adventure and you had to take the monkey by-pass at the Safari cause your dad had padded-vinyl roof on his car.
28. You say "water" weird.
29. Your car is covered in yellow-green dust in April.
30. You know that ACME is a supermarket, not just a Warner Bros creation.
31. Because your town was founded before 1776, all restaurants, bars, and shops have 'ye', 'olde', or 'colonial in their names.
32. You know the myth of the New Jersey devil and you think it lives as Gov. Christie Todd Whitman.
33. You think the Olive Garden is crap and should never have opened in NJ.
34. You remember when Hoboken was a ghetto not overpriced.
35. There is a fruit and veggie stand down the road.
36. You like vinegar or gravy on your french fries.

if you've understood anything from my last 2 posts than YOU might be form jersey. if not, then you guys can fuggeddaboudit!

You missed one...

What do you call a shore tourist? A Benny. That goes way back to the 20's. It described the tourists coming off the trains with their 100 dollar bills.

I miss the bakeries. We don't have a decent bakery out here and the bagels suck. I also miss those crappy rainy summer days down at the shore (yup, it's the beach here, but it's still the shore back east). Miss the Pine Barrens. Miss Philly...

True enough. Funny thing about SOCAL...if you live/drive in Orange or LA county, all the freeways are "named" San Diego FWY, Long Beach FWY etc. Down is SD county, all numbers...well, they renamed the 94 for Martin Luther King 10-15 years ago, and some folks are calling it the MLK now, but otherwise, just the 5, 15, 8 etc.

Personally, I don't understand how those Northern SOCALers navigate. Stupid "San Diego FWY" doesn't come to San Diego.
