Laptop recomendations

I have a itch to get a laptop for school and home to replace my old desktop.

I will be mainly using it for writing papers, storing/playing/editing videos, music and pictures.
I need something that will start up fast and opens up programs fast since.

Im looking to spend between 0-$800 but will spend more if its actually worth it.

Im out of the loop when it comes to computers so I dont have any idea on what to get

What do you all recommend?

Thanks in advance for any advice/help
-Matt

I'm going to be getting one soon too... and I've pretty much settled on this one. I've seen it for sale for under $1k. I've been looking for something with horsepower and decent dedicated graphics and for the price, this beats almost everything else.

I have two laptops made by Acer. They both work great for me and my fiance. They were both under 500 bucks. and they can have up to 4 gigs of ram put in them. Check them out on buy.com or at staples. Just my $.02.

If you are going to actually take it places don't forget about the most important issue, durability. Most come with plastic cases and hinges. They break and a new case is as much as a new laptop. I have an IBM T40 that has a metal case and hinges. It's a little old now, but indestructable. Stay away from the cheap plastic crap.
