I'm not into technology at all, but I prefer a laptop. I believe you can't use the Microsoft programs? Both have definite advantages and there is a new Ipad that is likely soon to be announced also!

I asked the wife because she has an iPad and a Mac. She broke it down to, "What you want to do with it?" If you're working/schooling with your device, laptop. Purely entertainment, iPad. She said, "If I were editing a document, laptop. Playing a card game, iPad." Hope this helps.

I agree with the above post. A little background on what you plan to do with it would make the choice easier. If your just planning on surfing the web and responding to email then go Ipad. If edditing docs, movies, pics etc. Laptop. I know you said you wanted a Mac but I wouldent overlook the fact that there are a bunch of companies who make tablets that flip into a laptop for windows(best of both worlds deal). Personally I'm anti-mac but that's neither here nor there and I can see the draw to their products.

I have a Mac. I run Mac OS, Windows and Linux on it. Hard to argue against a machine that can run ALL the best OS's. FYI, Android phone, not a total fan-boy!

Point & click get a iPad. Any serious work get a lappy. That being said I'm on my iPad right now, but would rather be on my daughter's surface RT (even with its lack of apps).

I bought a windows to begin with, that way I would not have to install another OS to make up for the one my computer originally came with. . I'm just joking, Mac is a nice OS and if I were doing heavy music or video editing its a great choice.

Anyhow the Mac vs. PC argument is a whole other topic and I don't want to derail this thread. I was just making sure the OP knows that there are devices dedicated to being both a laptop and tablet (and are super slick to). You just can not get them in iOS or whatever Macs latest OS is (snow leopard maybe? I'm not too up on my mas OS). You could also think about a keyboard for an iPad but then you would still be missing out on the office suit which would stink if your planning on typing documents, using excell etc.

On a side note I am an android junkie I'm currently posting from my android tablet and I recently bought the Google Nexus 4 so I can have pure android on my phone... and I love it!!!!

Personally I use my MacBook Pro for almost everything, but my iPad is just an expensive Netflix streaming device. haha.

Honestly though if you go the laptop route look at these two websites, they always have good deals on computers. Just buy smart.

If you can afford it, nothing wrong with having an IPad and a laptop. I use my laptop for most school work but for web surfing, or even research for papers, I use my iPad. Intake the iPad if I'm going to be sitting somewhere a while, traveling. I imagine some of the android tablets are good too, but I have always liked apple products.

You CAN get M$ Office on iPad, but it involves some compromises and a subscription to Office 365.

On OS X (current latest is 10.8.x Mountain Lion) you can still get Office for Mac 2011 Home and Student (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) or Home & Business (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)

Or, you can get a subscription to Office 365 and have access to all of that plus some "niceties" and be able to use on PC, Mac, or iOS (up to 5 PCs/Macs, iPad app is free but requires subscription)

I use a MacBook Pro in my side business and manage to get by without MS Office. I really didn't want to have to tweak settings to make it work since I do that at my primary job with Windows as it is. Yes, it was pricey, but worth it for me.

I have both. I find a reason for both. I like my MacBook Pro for word processing, web surfing, and downloading. I like my Ipad for book reading, TV/movie watching, and games. I don't really use the others for the opposite functions.

Sites built in Flash do not display, leaving a large portion of the web unavailable.

I have a four year old MacBook Pro, and a one year old iPad. The laptop is a much more capable machine than the tablet. I bought the tablet to try to bridge the gap between the laptop and a smart phone, which is what it does, but no way I'd want to depend on it as my primary computer.

Laptop for the power and versatility. iPad for surfing the web, and a definite NO to a netbook. I had one and it just sucked all around.
At the end of the day if you could only have one, the only real option is using the laptop because there are some things that tablets just can't do. Tablets have trouble with flash and I can't think of any that do Java. A hardware keyboard will always be more ergonomic than an on screen one, but really which one you want/need depends on what you use it for.

I have an Asus Transformer TF700. With the optional keyboard dock I have the best of both worlds. And 14 hour battery life ain't too shabby either.

I don't know what kind of websites he surfs regularly, but the however many years I've had my iPad I've never ran across a website that relies solely or completely on flash. Pretty much all websites nowadays support HTML5. Every once on a while you might run across a flash applet that doesn't work, but that's usually just games. I use a MacBook Pro and also boot Windows 7 and Linux. I have an iPad 2, was a gift. Probably wouldn't buy one on my own, it's mostly just a pleasure device for surfing the web and other occasional things.
