Larps new job, restoring M998s, pics inside

just thought i would share some pics with yall....we had some big shots at work today, namely the governor of WV and Maj. General Tackett for a little shindig (which means i didn't do shit today, got off work at 1pm and got paid for 8 hours )

here is what we start with, granted this is one of the worst ones, but they are all pretty fucked up.

the body gets removed from the frame and either my team or the other team gets the body.

we commence to repair the body filling any holes, straighten or replace panels, put in a 3 point seat belt kit, sand mask and prep for paint,

meanwhile the engine, frame and components are disassembled and rebuilt my section also gets the frame for repairs, prep and paint.

after paint the frame goes back to reassemble for a new or rebuilt engine, trans, differential, and all components.

we then get the painted body back and reassemble all its little parts. new lights, new insulation, all the little canvas straps, new windshields, rubber bits like grommets and weather stripping.

also the hood has been redone. new lights, cracks fiberglassed and fresh paint.

then the body goes to final assembly. and mates back up with the assembled frame gets new seats, new canvas and the refurbished hood and inspected.

2 door

4 door

and this is my little bay where my team does tear down, repairs and reassemble of the body's.

i know that it dont look like much now but we just got started up. we are waiting on money for tool sets for each team. i have about 1/2 of my personal tools there right now.

Nice work Larp. I'm sure it's much cheaper to refurb them than it is to just spend another 60k on a new one.

yeah, lots cheaper.

most of these are old Marine core trucks, so they get rebuilt to army standards.

the body work is a bitch. ever try to weld thin aluminum with a spoolgun?...i would give my left nut for a TIG.

Great job. I wouldn't be surprised if I have used a 998 from you guys before. Who do you usually send them to, active units or Guard? Do you guys do any of the up-armor or just like the ones pictured? I liked my M1114 (like this one)but after seeing what an EFP IED did to some of ours I hope we get buffalo's next trip. Thanks for providing a valuable service to the troops.

I dig those old puffers (what we used to call the 998s). Much more nimble than the gun trucks (1045s and 1046s) that we used on the CAAT teams. Went a lot of places in those things that I'd never go in my jeep - because it wasn't mine, and if I broke it, I didn't care. Just get it hauled back and get a new one.

Pic time.

you havent used one from us ..(yet) that 4 door is the first compleate one we have done. you may have used one from a outfit in main that do the same thing. they are our competion. and if you park ours next to thiers our is 100% better.
we do ALOT better attention to detail on ours. no overspray on the rubber or wires, we glue or weld patches into the unnecessary body holes instead of plugging them.
