Oh! Wow! Is it difficult? Do you want to be a radio broadcaster or something?

It's not so much difficult as it is tedious. It's a lot of electronics information.

No, not a braodcaster. It started because I wanted to put a CB radio in my Jeep. And then I thought, if I was going to do that I might as well go all the way which turned into wanting a HAM radio. And now I'm here... It'll be nice to have though since I already work in communications, and I live in hurricane alley. When we get hurricanes I'm required to stay behind because I'm emergency personnel.

Ahh! I see I see. That makes sense then. But you are going to go all out in getting your license and everything though? Like you said - it would be nice to know all of that stuff in case you ever found yourself in an emergency situation like that.

Better to be safe than sorry!

Yeah. I figure 'why not'? I don't have anything better to do with my downtime. It may come in handy one day... on the other hand, I may obtain my license and absolutely never use it.

Haha! I like that mentality!
I should probably learn how to "properly" use my CB... Maybe I'll do that the rest of the night...

Hahaha! I suppose you are correct, sir!

I guess I was more or less thinking "proper" as in learning how everything works/is supposed to work and etiquette in getting assistance from fellow off-roaders and what-not...

How's the manual reading going for you?

I'm learning about reactance and impedance, about to start on resonance, and coming up in about 20 minutes its diodes transistors and integrated circuits.

Honestly it's a bit over my head. I have a very very kindergarten level of understanding of electricity and electronics, and I've never gotten this much into it. Everyone says not to get lost in the details though and I should be fine.

Truthfully though, there are a total of 396 questions in the 'question pool.' These same 396 questions will be used until 2014, at which point the questions will be changed. The Tech exam is composed of 35 questions randomly picked from the 396 question pool. So basically if you are good at memorization, and you can memorize all 396 correct answers, you can theoretically obtain your license without ever sticking your nose in a book. And the manual lists all 396 questions with correct answers for you.

I suppose you could do that but for the purposes you're doing this for, wouldn't it be better to have a conceptual understanding of how most, if not everything, works? I guess if you get sick of it but still want to get your license, you could go the memorization route... But what good is the certification if you can't use it because you actually don't know how? Haha! I think I'm repeating myself... Sorry.

Well, that's why I'm trying to honestly read the manual from cover to cover.

A lot of people enjoy building their own radios it seems, and this information would be good for them. I, on the other hand, have absolutely no interest building my own technology - I just need to know how to understand the different frequencies etc...
