Well, you have to do your homework. Finding an area of track that has lost it's easement rights to the original land owners? Thats the trick. Finance a year of college that way...few of us. Oh, and take a torch. Those suckers are heavy.

Yeah! That video was taken right by my house from how it looks! Probably 4 blocks MAX. Haha! I didn't think there was an actual "rail yard" though...

I just found this:

Iowa Department of Transportation
Office of Rail Transportation
800 Lincoln Way
Ames, IA 50010
Phone: 515-239-1140

Evidently the Railroad portion of the Iowa DOT is in Ames! I think if I gave them a call, they'd have what I'm looking for - or at least be able to hook me up. Haha!

Think they might give you an old piece. If not check out that retired hooker on the corner. Could prob get an old piece there too.

Haha! How does one go about doing that?? - You're giving me ideas here... Would you happen to know what kind of steel those tracks are made out of?

That'd be nice. Haha! Hopefully I can get a hold of some! It'd be nice to get something cheap and that's locally available!

And...

Well, there is kinda the kicker. Growing up in the panhandle in Texas we/I sorta floated around during cotton and wheat harvest driving combines & whatnot so you got to know the folks. Some of them had old lines, usually pre 1950s. You look for rotten ties, rusted out bolts, wash outs. They aren't used, and sometimes the farmers pay for their removal so it doesn't trip up their cows. I'm not sure of the steel grade. Not knowledgable on that part. You can torch them but it was easier to take 2 pickups with one pulling a long trailer, the 2nd would pull the rail itself a ramp of wood and cinder blocks into the trailer. It wasn't easy, but the money was good. Nowadays if the ties are good you can make good money selling them to landscapers to.

That's what I was originally thinking as well. I know of a few "Scrap yards" - though I don't know if they'd really know what they have. I'm hoping for a nice day so I can make a walk around a u-pull I heard about - maybe if I can't find anything today when I call around I'll call the scrap yards as well...

OH MAN! Haha! I don't think I have the resources or manpower to do anything like that! But I wish I did! That'd be AMAZING! I bet one of those rails would make HUNDREDS of knives - or whatever you wanted! Haha!

Thanks for the idea though!

The fact you thought of it is a sure indicator you need to change your nightly diet of melted lemons.
