Yessir! Fire bricks and some home-made chisel work! I need to get my propane tanks filled back up though - ran out...

When I say mini-forge - I mean mini-forge though... It can probably treat an average size machete at the most... It's just meant for knives...

Why do you ask?

Oh yeah! It takes a while though. You gotta' let the forge heat up and the bricks get saturated, of course and then you put the metal in there and leave it for like 15-20 minutes(some say longer - I suppose it depends on the material thickness and what-not)... You can stay and babysit it if you want and actually might be able to get it heated faster depending on how it's set up... ie. you may be able to "wave" the material over the hottest spot in the forge...

You can use MAPP gas which works about 2x as fast. That's what I used originally - but the tanks are smaller and much more expensive...

Did you build yourself a forge as well?! Are you making a knife/blade?

Working on something. I saw a show how sushi knives were made by hand. It kinda interested me.

Ahhh! Cool!

Another important question is what type of steel are you trying to do this with? There ARE some metals that heating in a forge will deteriorate the metal's integrity or change the way the metal behaves after it cools back down.

MOST high carbon metals will behave "normally" when you treat them in a forge or try to heat them up to "work" them... And most can be hardened through basic heat treating...

But stainless steel, on the other hand, can be VERY difficult to work with and depending on the type of the stainless steel - you might only be able to do the stock removal and have to have it sent somewhere to get a special type of treatment...

I actually have a couple feet of stainless that is PERFECT width for a couple small knives I want to make - but the fact that it's so hard to work with and treat properly - it makes me scared to work with it.

I was going to try and fold two pieces together. A high carbon and a low carbon. Then just keep it oiled
