I think it's 60% but you get less deductions so you clear closer to 80%.

On the other hand if I quit my job, then have a kid I don't have to work and will have enough $$ for steaks AND beer. And when that money runs out, you have another kid!

You can use your sick time or vacation/holiday, or both, depending on your employer's policy.

I'm not really sure, but don't think so. It totally depends on your employer, there is nothing you get from the govt. But socialized medicine is much like the metric system in this country, pure evil.

Luckily. If people can't afford to have kids then they shouldn't be having them in the first place. I don't see why an employer should have to pay for someone to not work just because they got knocked up.

You guys should just follow Canada's example and have free healthcare and 1 year paid mat leave . Haha

Wouldn't it be nice to take a year off and have your job available to go back to?

It won't happen here because the insurance companies run the country, along with all the other big $$ industries. Until the country is run by the people, for the people we are hosed.

Don't think that's the whole idea behind it... People still can't afford to live off maternity leave salaries. I have never once met someone who decided to stay home and make babies back to back for a living. And the maternity leave won't make you be able to afford a baby any more than when your working...

I could live off 60-80% of my salary. Hell people in this country leech off of welfare and food stamps and don't even have jobs. If we had a similar maternity leave there would be even more leeching off the system from people that do have jobs.

It's a nice thought wanting to help out the less fortunate but the problem is that it just gets abused and very few even try to better themselves. They're happy right where they are getting money for nothing.

Thing is the paid maternity leave is part of their healthcare program, which really works for them. Despite the few horror stories that circulate in the US it's one of the best systems in the world. Does it have it's problems? Absolutely. Would it work in our country? Absolutely not! That's not to say we shouldn't just give up trying to figure out something that works. It's gonna be a long painful process and it's gonna suck, taking as much $$ away from the insurance companies as we can is the first step.

Speaking as a foster parent I've seen people with no money raise great kids and people with money be terrible parents. Money has very little to do with it Josh. And Its not the employer that pays it's our government.

I still believe people should have to pass a test to become a parent. You need one to drive but not to mess up a kids life I guess.

Donnie, I totally agree with you. Here's the rub, you can't hold someone's fertility hostage. The privilege to drive, yes. So until we can figure out how to sterilize everyone until they pass that test, it ain't gonna work.

The abuse happens everywhere. In every country. not much a person can really do about it. although it's more welfare and Unemployment Insurance that gets abused up here. Not so much maternity leave

I'd be the first to admit I have no clue about somethings but you don't need money to be a good parent. This I know.
