Laws in the USA - Suspension/Tires/...

hi,

here in germany we have many laws that tell us how we can improve our cars.
Par example we aren´t allowed to install more than a 4"-5" suspenion lift. bigger tires than 33s are´t allowed. all tires have to be covered by the fender flares. most useful front bumpers aren´t allowed because they are unsafe if there is an accident with a pedestrian. and many more laws restrict us in building up our jeeps how we want.

and for most of that things you must know an inspector from the governments testing organisation to be allowed to install such things (all changes must be checked by the governments testing organisation and then they will be written in the car papers. because then the cops can see if our changes are allowed. btw our cars are tested every two years by this organisation so they can see if our cars are still safe.).
a friend p.e. wasn´t allowed to install a simple 3.5" RE lift kit...

when i look at your jeeps in the US i start thinking that you don´t have such laws. am i right?

i could see some +40" tires, +8" suspension lifts, uncovered tires and many other things like installed high-lifts in front of the front bumpers.

your jeeps over there look pretty good. i´d like to be able to modify my jeep like you can do. but my tj is still at the max. it would be possible to do more but then they make brake test and drive tests and many more other tests. these tests cost many thousand $, so it´s nearly impossible for a non-millionaire like me to do that...

one big advantage for people who live in the US...

There are general rules.. and then each state has its own rules over what can and can't be done. For example the some states say the fender flares must cover the tires, other could care less.

I think the laws vary from state to state about lifts and fenders, but I've never heard of any laws about bumpers.

p.e. the very useful ARB front bumpers aren´t allowed because of the shackles (is this the right word...?) that hang in the front.
from this year on the manufacturers of bumpers must show in crash-tests that there bumper is as safe as the stock bumper. otherwise the bumper will be forbidden for street-usage...

Some states are also more relaxed than others when enforcing the laws and a lot of cops don't know or don't care much about them when they stop you. I know this is a small detail, but I had Florida plates for the longest time (no inspection down in FL) and this year I decided to do the right thing and get New Jersey plates. The first time trying to pass the inspection it didn't because I had light guards on all my lights on the Jeep. So I drove out of the inspection center, unscrewed the guards, assembled everything back on and then passed the test. Once out of the place I put them back on again. I see thousands of cars driving with light guards here in Jersey, but supposedly they are not allowed.

In Mississippi, there is a 4" limit on lifting vehicles from the stock height.

Jeeps(Wranglers) arn't considered trucks here in Arizona... so they don't need mudflaps, while a lifted truck has to have flaps. And we don't even need fenders. There are a lot of things here than the laws don't cover. But could be the complete opposite in the next state.

Florida isnt strict at all........ Im running no fenders flares on one side and no front bumper and havent gotten any complaints from the law.....only my friends cuz they think it looks like crap but them

In Pennsylvania things are kind of similar. We have to have our vehicles inspected once a year by a certified mechanic. This includes a mechanical/safety inspection and an emissions inspection. Depending on what county you live in, the emissions inspection is just a visual inspection. However in my specific county, they hook your car up to a computer and determine if it falls into accepted limits.

We also can't have our tires stick out from under our flares. But we can go as large as we want in tire size, as long as they don't stick out. The only law about bumpers is that they must be within 30 inches from the ground. I do not believe there is a law about lift height.

We also have to have marker lights on all four sides of the vehicle. Every light installed on the vehicle, even off road lights, must be operational. But if it is an offroad light, it must be covered and off.

And the horn must work.

Now keep in mind that not all of these sweet Jeeps actually get driven on the road. Some of them are just for the trail. And some of these owners are just above the law, or think they are, and do it anyway! We also have "mechanic friends" that will overlook certain small things during inspection. Well some do. But even if they pass something that is obviously illegal, the cops here have the right to pull your inspection sticker right off your windshield. (Maybe not now but I know they could 10 years ago.)

We also cannot use light guards, but I do, and I've never been bothered for it. Knock on wood. (taps head) In PA wranglers are registered as StationWagons, which there are no towing restrictions for. So I could tow a friggin yacht with my TJ if I wanted. Not that I would try it, maybe.

ok. i see you have some similar laws over there.

but some are very useles in my opinion.

a friend is allowed to install a v6 with a biturbo and 420 HP in a small volkswagen. and i have problems to install some JKS disconnects in a legal way... the inspector daid that it isn´t legal. now i think i have to replace the disconnects every tweo years befor the inspection with the stock sway bar end links.

thats a bummer, But arent the autobauns out in or near germany? Here in texas, there arent many laws, i havent heard of any about lifts. in my opinion if it fits in the lane then its quite alright. Ohh yea we do need mud flaps on our duallys, but they arent that strict about it. Reminds me, i need to put one back on

Here in AZ the laws are pretty lax on modifications. It helps since Wranglers are actually titled as station wagons.

here in ohio it can actually vary by county as well. In Toledo we dont have to have our vehicles inspected but in counties over by PA i know people do. but i have also found if you have a nice rig and get stopped by a cop for speeding or something they will go easy on you and compliment you on the rig.
