You know you always hear how tough Jeeps. How capable they are off-road and how they go anywhere. I would like to see a really good show down between a modern Jeep Rubicon 2012-2013 JK or JKU against say a Unimog 1500 or Unimog 5000 (the 5000 would be totally unfair I think) in real world competitions.
Now, I donít care in the Jeep Rubicon is modified- it will probably have to be lifted 2.5-3.0 inches to achieve total off-road capabilities. I would guess the Jeep would need to run 35-37 inch tires with new differential gears in the 4.88 to 5.10 range or more. That would be fine with me. As long as the drive train remains stock beyond those changes. That would make the Jeep at least tall enough to at least attempt to run in the ditches created by the Unimog 385/65R20 tires. So I will give that a completely stock Jeep Rubicon JK or JKU would not have the ground clearance to drive over the same obstacles or even through tracks of the Unimog. So for this to be a fair test it must be slightly modified.
What Iím really interested in are these capabilities: fording, hill climbing, side slope negotiation, vertical obstacle negotiation, off camber testing, and traction obstacles( i.e mud or snow). Iím really curious to see if the Jeep is as trail rated in a mostly stock form as the Unimog is.
I would really like to see what the Jeep is capable of. I checked out the website and I just donít see a really capable off-road truck. It seems to me that the Rubicon is a truck that is designed to go off-road in a limited sense. Where as the Unimog is designed for the off-road world and the paved world is an after thought.
