You have to love Full Metal Jacket and R. Lee Ermy.

Hey, I'll compare DD214s with anyone claiming the Army isn't very tough. God made snipers so Marines would have heros!!
I never said that the Army isn't tough... just that it takes a different mindset. Personally I served in the Navy... but during Desert Storm I served with a Marine Recon group as a FAC, I have a brother who has 14 years in the Corps, and multiple friends that have served in both the Marines and the Army. Of course people like to say that there service is the most hardcore, but really if I had to rate how "hard" the different branches are Marines would definately be on top with the Army being a close second, then the Navy and tied for last would be the AF and Coast Guard... I heard that the AF even issues new recruits umbrellas.... Umbrellas... Really... WTF's up with that?

All joking aside tho I don't care what branch you served in you're all brothers to me.

The Air Force does all sorts of things that make good sense... don't know what they're thinking

My father was Air Farce... he once told me about a time he was out on exercises and a huey came out to the site and picked him up to fly him back to base... he got in all mentally prepared for some emergency only to get ripped by his Top for not mowing his grass... They take good care of folks and pretty much do the "9 to 5" thing, but they're a lot less forgiving with minor stuff. Army or Marines you do a little PT and get a chunk of your backside bit off and that's it, Air Farce you're signing paperwork and it gets stuck on your eval.

I concsiously chose the branch where I knew I could cut loose a little and pay the fine in pushups

After recruiting in a minimall with all 4 branches right there on top of each other, and being stationed on umpteen Air Farce bases (I'm Air Defense, we try to work with em so we can both figure out how not to shoot down our own, and even more so since the '03 incidents), I agree that the differences aren't worth arguing over at all.

I agree with many of the other posters that he should talk to recruiters from every branch and get as much info as he needs before he decides. For myself, the first time I saw "The Sands of Iwo Jima", when I was 9 or 10, I knew I wanted to be a Marine. One of the proudest days of my life was when I graduated from Boot Camp. No matter which branch he chooses. It will be an experience he will always remember.

im in the air force now. in my job i get to fly all over the world and move stuff for other branches. i have interacted with all the branches. the thing i liked about a lance corporal who i was chatting with. when i asked him what his job was he said im a marine. that spoke to me. i would have said im a loadmaster but this marine saw himself as a marine first and whatever else second.

I spent 10 years as an Infantryman both active and guard and did about everything an Infantryman can do (airborne, sniper, airassault, all of it). I've been out almost 10 years now and most of my friends are Army and Marine vets. We all have pride in our service, but agree on one truth..dirt is dirt is dirt! Infantry means being in the dirt with no shower, COLD, WET, Hungry and Tired...all the time. There is no glory. Life is rough. It sucks! Anyone who thinks it doesn't suck didn't do anything or is lying. Sitting in a foxhole as the rain fills it with cold water having the knowledge that you're not going anywhere for a very long time sucks. But, it gives you perspective for the rest of your life. After that, you've done something most people haven't done, or couldn't do. Hard things seem easier after that. That knowledge makes you tougher and walk taller than others and lasts forever. It's a tough club to join and not always worth it to everyone. Good luck.

Having served in the United States Marine Corps for over 10 years, having gone to other military branches schools and those of other nations, were I observed their Discipline (or lack thereof), their Esprit De Corps (or lack thereof), their Camaraderie (or lack thereof), having fought along side all other branches of the US Military, and other nations, I can say without any hesitation, that the United States Marine Corps is the finest fighting force in the world, Bar None !

Now that being said, and before any you all get your nickers in a bunch, "We" as a nation have the finest fighting force on this planet, Bar None !

There always has been and always will be inter service rivalry. But, when it hits the fan, there is one thing you can count on; "We" all are heading in the same direction, towards the fight !

To the OP, every single Marine I have ever known, knew he was going to become a Marine, it was never a question. Becoming a Marine isnít for everyone. Have your brother talk to all the branches recruiters.

To all those that serve or have served this great nation, "God Bless You"

I thought we'd buried this thread. It's going nowhere at this point. Everyone wants to argue why THEIR branch is best. Talk to the different recruiters. See what they can offer. Can they offer EXACTLY what you want? Go from there. At this point, this thread is full of opinions instead of advice, especially since it's mostly about FORSCOM military. Step up to the SOCOM side of things and lines get blurred pretty fast.

personally the marines and army were really 1 in the same.. we live together eat together etc etc. Now for yal who have deployed know, the place to visit was the naval station, or the Air Base.. why? better food, silverware, A POOL! A F'N POOL (with bikinis!) Running water, i could go on and on about what they had and.. well what we didnt or went with out.. Now before some of the hard chargers from around the branches start trying to bash my head in via internet I know there were airforce and navy that were in the "suck" too .. you are a minority and you know it. haha

Marines. Plain and simple.
Why?
BC im in the Marines, and im biased.
Other then that?
Marines have the best training by far of any branch. If your brother goes into combat arms he will hate life!
Trust me on that. I was gung ho to go be an 03.
As a matter afact I wanted 0331 machine gunner. I changed my mind one BC I scored high on the asvab. And two. Once you get out for good they hand you a sheet of paper saying what civilian jobs relate to what you did!
Know what its gana say if he did combat arms. Law enforcement. If you want to learn a job and get out and do it in the civilian world choice a job close to that.

On another note. Tell your little brother to go to collage!!! Go reserves and go to collage. You will come out an officer. Make more money. And get more then grunts. And more than enlisted.
listen I want to tell you combat arms is a hard life!
You can get a better job and still see combat.
Im a 3531 motor t vehicle operator. Great job 3rd dangerous in the USMC BC of convoys. There's other cool jobs then just being in the field everyother week. Remember just just BC your a pog doesn't mean your not a marine.
Yes combat arms you get a gun and your told to go stand on post to watch nothing for hours then get into firefights times to where you cant even tell who's enemy or where the hell the bastards are.
You will see people die in infantry field. And you will lose friends and thats something you will never forget. And always have on your mind.
in close.
Screw the army sorry army. You guys just get better pay and better equipment.
But we do more with less.
And the better drill instructors.
But seriously reconsider the job!
And talk to a recruiter as soon as possible. It took me 7 months just to contract.

Army! We can spell the word "college"!
You see an awful lot of former Marines in the Army for a reason.

Air Force...let the officers fight.

Having said that, I've got several good friends in all branches, including Coast Guard.

I was active duty AF for 8 years, and TxANG for another 4.5 years. F-106 Weapon Control System Specialist while active, and then a Combat Comm tech on Wideband Radios in the Guard.

Most of the bikinis at the "club med" forward air bases he was refferring to are Air Force though...

And before anyone tries calling me a fobbit, I'm normally attached to an AF facility that is nowhere near a FOB, so the fobbits are actually a lot closer to the suck than I am :-). OIF1 we got set up "alone and unafraid" NW of Talil on some barren chunk of sand and cooked, but I've moved up in the world and get the cushy gigs these days.

Navy. Plain and simple. Some people bash us but I understand its because theyre jealous. Because we stop to visit all sorts of countries get hammerred get women then get back on the boat and make our way to the next port.

All joking aside each branch thinks they are the best. Like I'm in the Navy (really i am) and I think its the best out of them all. Because we are on the sea, have planes in the sky and men on the ground. But a marine, soldier, airmen, or puddle pirate (coastguard I am only kidding around) will have a valid argument on why they are better.

It depends on what you want to do basically and what branch fits you best.

Ya know there are a lot of other jobs in the military besides "Infantry"..regardless of what branch. I would think it would be a wise choice to try for some sort of schooling that would help him when and if he gets out of active duty. So many guys (and women too ) are getting out after they're hitch and coming home to nothin.... No jobs, they all went to China, India, any where but here in the US. If he is ok with getting out and flippin burgers at mickyD's...great.
I guess a lot of young guys these days all want to be Snipers, or they want to be SEALS, or SF, or some other macho rating....well, thats fine, but few make the grade.
If he really is stuck on going "Infantry", then I think I would lean towards the Marine Corps.... Personally I feel they have the best training in that field and training and discipline is what will keep him alive.
My opinion he should plan to stay in and make a career out of it, there is'nt a better retirement, Free Medical ($$$$$$$$) .... Or get out and join the Border Patrol !! God knows we all them we can get, and his training will help and his service years add up to retirement !..... Good luck to him... "BH"
