Meet Dick Poenneke

Dick moved to Alaska and built his log home in 1968, when he was 51 years old. He had a real mission in mind; he wanted to build himself a log home – working completely alone with only hand tools. He lived there in retirement for 27 years (he passed away in 2003 at age 86).

Dick Proenneke moved to Twin Lakes Alaska (near Kodiak). He broke ground on his log home project right away. That was in May, and finished his log home 3 short months later in July. It took him just 10 days to erect the shell of his log home. He was working completely alone during that time and because he had no power Dick only used basic hand tools to build his log home; hand saw, hammer, chisel, pliers, hoe, shovel, knife, auger and really not much else.

Here is his wikipedia page.

PBS shows airs that program about 6 times a year. When I see it on, I can't bring myself to turn the channel even though I've seen it about 100 times.

it's a long running joke at my girlfriends house that everytime her family and I are going to watch a movie we're going to look at some Dick. I have both the first and second Alone in the Wilderness and I can't tell you how many times her father and I have watched it. Also, I forced my girlfriend to watch it after she forced me to watch Toy Story 3. Some classic quotes in there

"One spoon, one hotcake"
"This lake was kinda like a woman, all smiles one minute and dancing a tantrum the next!"

Dick Proenneke is my hero
It's got a Willy's body, a Chevy engine, Ford axles, GM transmission, and Dodge steering components... it must be a Wrangler.
