Memphis is a great city with lots of history and culture. If you are really into blues and rock there aren't many better cities to see it live than Memphis. It truly is "the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock n roll." There are also some of the friendliest and most hospitable folk 'round these parts than anywhere else in the country... and I've been almost everywhere from coast to coast.
Now... the BAD part about Memphis is the over abundance of slummy neighborhoods mixed in with the nicer ones. It's like that until you get out of the city limits and there's not much being done to clean up the "hoods". The city government is openly corrupt and the mayor is a thug with an "in your face" attitude about it. The school system is terrible and funds are being terribly misappropriated. Property taxes and the cost of living are laughable and keep going up while the job market is mediocre at best. The Police are extremely understaffed and crime is an issue to the point where they have lowered the standards to become a Memphis city cop... and while I did say we have some friendly and hospitable folks around here racism and a general attitude of entitlement are an issue for some.
Blah blah blah... Smeg is right to some degree. I love the city but doubt I'll move back. I still work there but the state of Mississippi has been good to me and I'm quite content here for now.
BTW... the Word Champion BBQ contest was awesome.... I ate, I drank, and now I'm going to go fall down somewhere.
