Metal Shaving in my Eye

So last night I was working on my led flush mount tail lights and when I was cutting with a dremel, something shot into my eye. I was wearing ski goggles, but apparently it went up through the little holes on the underside of the goggles. It started to really irritate me so I tried getting it out but had no luck. I couldnt see the mrtal in my eye though. I tried flushing it out and using a magnet but neither helped. This morning i lift my eyelid up and there is a bump on my eyelid and is super red but still cant see the metal. Should I go see a doctor for precaution? I dont know if I'm being paranoid or what but I figure that my eyes arent something to play around with.

dude, go to the doctor NOW!

It could be lodged into you eyeball and get infected, not to mention it might be scratching the hell out of your cornea.

I had a shard in my eye too (fell in to my eye while showering - the shard was in my hair). It started to rust within a DAY. Hurt like heck too... But the eye doc got it out pretty easily and added some medication to numb things so I wouldn't rub the eye.

Yeah they checked good. And thats what I'm hoping. I'm still confused about how it got in my eye in the first place

Check out this corneal ulcer I had about a year ago. I have been ran over by a truck going 70 mph, but this ulcer was the worst pain I ever felt in my life.

Oh and the white thing that looks kinda like a reflection is the ulcer

I was cleaning out a crude oil stock tank with a high pressure hose and there was bacteria in the oil. Some splashed in my eye and I fell asleep with my contacts in that night. Now I'm half blind in my right eye because it left a bad scar, but they said I'm lucky I can see at all.

Not the eye drops! I had to deal with that for 3 months, 5 times a day.

Since I look like an alien or something in the first picture, here's me looking normal... About as normal as I can get, anyway.

I had a piece of rust off of a steel water pipe in my eye last year. It was in there for a good day or so. I have a family member who is a nurse and I got her to check it out for me. She got a cotton swab, pulled my eye lid away from my eye, and just gently rubbed the cotton swab under my eyelid. She removed the piece in a matter of seconds. I DO NOT recommend you doing this yourself. Get someone else to run the cotton swab. It'll pick up anything left under your eylid.

I got hit in the eye with a bungee cord once. Tore my retina, had to wear an eye patch, and keep my eye dilated for a couple weeks. I thought when it hit that it tore my eye out of socket. I was by myself mowing the yard. No fun.

Where was the bungee cord in this situation?

It was holding up the flapper thing to the deck. I was hosing of the mower after use and BANG! Came undone from the bottom, flipped up and straight in the eye. It also hit so hard it split my eyebrow. Lets just say I tense up a little when I see a bungee cord.

Go to the docs again. I had a piece of tin in my eye for 8 days. Doctors could not find it because it floated to the back of my eye. When i woke up on the 8th day my eye was really irritated. So i took myself down to the hospital and the doc there found it and plucked it off my eye with a 4 inch long needle. Lucky it had only just started to rust and did not screw my eye up. Keep getting it checked until it clears up. If it does rust in your eye you could loose your eye.

Heard of this guy who was using a hammer as a kid, and somehow it chipped. The chip, smaller than a lead bb, went through his eye and even though he went to the doctor, he eventually lost his eye. (To be fair, this was a long time ago, the doctor saved the eye at the time, and he could kinda see out of it until his 20's. he said if it happened now a doc could have saved his eye completely.)

I got hit in the left eye by a racquetball directly of my opponent's racket. I had turned back to see where he was - just as he hit it. Partially detached the retina (I guess that'd techincally be a tear), and I had vision issues with that eye for over 6 months. To this day, eyes are slow to respond to changes in light and glare just KILLS me. On the bright side though, I have incredible night vision!

And yes, I always wear eye protection now when playing racquetball, shooting, or working on vehicles.

Rule of thumb - if you think something could be in your eye seek medical attention asap. I too had a sliver of metal go in my eye while operating a fork truck and I didnt goto the eye dr. Till the next day when it started to rust in my eye and really started hurting, was removed easily and put on meds but I know better now!

similar thing happened to me, except with a tennis ball. I couldn't open my eyes for the rest of the day without searing pain in daylight. The next day, I went to the eye doctor and he confirmed i had torn a piece of retina. But fortunately, I was young and it healed on its own to 100%.

Always wear eye protection!

The shaving could have cut a small wound in your eye leaving it open for infection. Even if that shaving is gone i would get the doc to get you some antibiotic eye drops and maybe even some steroid eye drops to keep swelling down. If it spreads you can have a slew of problems that can lead to blindness. Since its in an area that always has movement and fluid discharge you will probably have a long healing time. Good luck, never take eye wounds / trauma lightly.
