What if I was?

Btw

I'm eating a fried egg roll, smoking a cigarette, and singing the Star-Spangled Banner because I can. I'll be damned if some fat politician takes those three things away from me.

I wanna eat bacon and butter and BUCKETS of cheese, okay? I want to smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section. I want to run through the streets naked with green Jell-o all over my body reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly might feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiener".

I thought that's why they invented BEER GOGGLES, to cope with such maladies in life.

I've had my tour in the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry. I can honestly say, there are some things that should NOT go into anyone's body.... chemically speaking. Basically, as long as it doesn't kill you or make you sick, manufacturers can put just about any chemical into your food and GET AWAY WITH IT!

Labeling has only recently (in the last 20 years) become compendial for food manufacturers for packaged goods. The fast food market is finally getting into the picture. At least now you can read what the heck is in most foods. However, most people don't read the label and don't care.... it's the old Caveat Entor (buyer beware). Even if you do read the label, there are always chemical compounds that are included the you need a chemistry degree to understand...fillers, preservatives, "enhancers", etc. Anyone remember RED DYE #3.....not very good for you. It was used for almost a century to color food and was banned because of the cancer link.

Manufacturers are basically left on their own devices to play nice with very minimal FDA oversight. Now manufacturers are required (by law) to disclose their product contents and nutritional values....IMO this is an example of good government. At least the consumer is being made aware of what they are really eating...This is the first step...awareness. People need to understand what the heck is in the food.

The next step (which the jury is still out on) what do those ingredients do to the human body, short term and long term? People should still have the choice but they should know the facts. We are only beginning to understand the links.

I have always struggled with preservatives. Oh, they are such a great idea for food manufacturers. Twinkies can have an almost infinite shelf life as long as the bag is sealed. Those preservatives displace and kill the bad bacteria so efficiently. However, those same artificial chemical compounds that preserve the food also kill the good bacteria in your digestive system too. IMO - eating preservatives on a long term basis is a plausible link to colon and stomach cancer.

So, if you knew that eating a certain food would kill you or give you cancer, would you still eat it?

I personally believe in the freedoms expressed in our constitution. owever, there are limits that must be placed on freedom. For instance, when someones freedoms do harm in any manner to others, they have reached the limit of their freedoms. This is why i support laws that limit where people can smoke. I do not have the right to spray asbestos on people so why should they be allowed to fill a room with smoke that is just as dangerous to my health? Smokers should be allowed to ruin their own health outside, in their homes, and in their cars.

As for a law against "fat people"... they are harming nobody but themselves. Let them do what they want. I also believe that the gov't should keep their noses out of the regulation of how restaraunts cook. People are perfectly capable of eating healthy... but that is their choice.

They only time fat people can cause harm is when they are sitting on an airplane where weight and balance is determined based on an average adult weight of 170lbs per person. Therefore, they should be charged for two tickets.

anyways... enough of my ranting.

as for healthy foods going up, i'm not talking about going out and buying speciatly foods that are "healthier". i'm just talking about not eating so much and watching your calories. you dont have to have the 3 piece twice fried special from KFC everytime you go. sure, you can if you're want, but be aware its not healthy. and notice i have yet to say that the government has the right to do this or that people have to choose to be healthy, bc i would be wrong on both accounts. i for one, do not eat healthy, heck, i'm from the deep south, just about everything i eat is either deep fried, BBQ, or has a cholesterol level so high none of our jeeps could climb it. but i do at least get out and excercise to stay in decent shape. again, i didnt say the government is right for attempting this, i just said its upsetting that people are bothered by someone trying to help get them healthy. personally, i think its wrong and unconstitutional of the government to tell you where you can and cant eat or who you can and cant serve, but on the same token, i think its sad to have gotten to the point where big brother is thinking about stepping in to make sure we stay healthy bc we as citizens obviously aren't doing it ourselves for the large majority (no pun intended).

lev, not trying to call you at all, but you said something about obese people not being able to eat in public, thats not what the bill said, it prevented restaraunts from serving them. they can take their own food and eat wherever the crap they want. and as for bringin back racial segration bc we're already discriminating, its called affirmative action. but thats a complete other topic......

i think some of yall are reading me wrong, I DO NOT think its right or lawful for the government to do this, all i said was i think its sad that people are upset over other people wanting them to be healthy.

The issue is this guy is taking 5 steps back with this bill. We are all already weary of big brother taking our rights away as it is. This does not help any, and that is my point.

I've had long discussions on forums about CCTV and the "Big Brother" paranoids. I used to live in the UK where there are CCTV cameras everywhere, every street, every shop, every train, bus etc etc.
Freedom isnt free. Just look how fast they caught those tube bombers thanks to CCTV.
I dont care if the government watches what I do on the internet. I dont care if they are watching where im going, or what I buy I got nothing to hide.
I have noticed Americans are much more concerned with privacy and invasion of it than just about anyone else. Thats not a criticism just an observation.
I do think its different telling someone how to live though, if someone wants to be fat its not for anyone to tell them they cant. You can tell them they SHOULDNT but not that they cant. Some people cant even help it either, its genetic. What would doctors do without unhealthy people anyway?

This is kind of off THIS topic but it was going there anyway

but if you're going to quote me, please quote the whole thought, not just part of it that will skew my vies when read by itself.

"I DO NOT think its right or lawful for the government to do this, all i said was i think its sad that people are upset over other people wanting them to be healthy."

Me quoting the last part of your comment didn't SKEW anything.

Quote:

He's not helping obesity

Quote:

He's not helping obesity by putting a bill out that scares people of losing their rights to eat in a restaurant.

Quote:
This does not help any, and that is my point.
If he had put out a serious attempt to HELP then people would not be upset.

^---- My point
