More desert shooting

Went out again today to shoot some handloads 2 yrs old and the wind was STRONG and I didn't find a level spot for the jeep-so, holding, breathing and heartbeat wasn't consistent, I'm learning my desert conditions

This one ain't bad considering the wind and CHEAP UMC .223 cartridges !!

They're all at about 130 yds

No rattlesnakes today !

Thanx for the comment, but

QUOTE=530ktm;783402]Nice grouping.[/QUOTE]

They're not that nice-conditions show

I've grouped 5 shots in a .219" group with that rifle in Ca. Bayarea competition, but that was with all the conditions perfect !!

It'll get better here in Nevada !!

Midway USA is an awesome company. (I saw their name on your targets) I get all kinds of reloading stuff from them. Since they're in Missouri and I'm in Kansas, I get next day delivery. Looks fun!

id think it would be cool....just to be able to ride out into a desert and shoot like that. ive never even seen a desert. is the desert private land, or is most of it federally owned? can you just go ride around in it too?

Yea, most of the land (desert) is BLM, with private PLOTS all over the place, I could get to Lake Tahoe and never drive on paved road (hafta cross some), but !!

Back where I go, I'm shooting West with 1500 ft of sand dune/hill as a backstop--

There are a lot of horses so you can't just start plinking with out checking for horses/Quads (weekends) and now and then a hiker ()

Unless you're riding a horse--you can't get close to these babies !!

Kinda neat--gunfire doesn't scare them-

My pistols I carry in aluminum, padded lockable cases--

I don't hunt anymore so I keep all the firearms pretty well outta sight !!

That looks like fun, I haven't been shooting in 3-4 years. I used to load some pretty hot loads for my .44 magnum Ruger Bisley and .357 Maximum (not Magnum) Thompson Center Contender that were fun to shoot out in the desert. My ears ring (tinnitus) so I'm kinda worried about doing any more shooting now for fear it'd just make it worse. And no, I never shot without hearing protection (except while hunting and in the military)... and usually both earplugs and muffs.

I didn't even use my earmuffs with the .223, but probably thursday I''ll take out some 45 colt firearms and I'll need the muffs-

This place is cool, I can take the hard way, over pretty big sand hills and NEED lockers/4lo, or go around on old rutted, potholed bad roads--

Kinda fun either way, but I prefer the lockers/4lo trip, you wouldn't believe the rocks on these hills !!

Jerry, I also suffer from acute tinnitus. I can thank the military for that......however, I still shoot quite a bit. I've found that the small, foam earplugs coupled with standard earmuffs seem to work really well for keeping the audio shock to a minimum. You might give it a try. It'll get you back into shooting and everyone knows that's the best kind of therapy there is!!

I just traded a 6.5 tcu Contender barrel, brass and dies for a new sound system for my yj
I was going to use it for pistol silhouette shooting but I could use some new sound in my jeep more and my 300 whisper barrel works very well anyway.

There's still a law in Nevada that gives the "Ranch" owner the right to shoot trespassers !!

So Obviously I ain't gonna cross any lines, cause there are some questionable properties back there !!

The wild horses "Mustangs" are supposedly descendants of the original "Mustangs" brought here by the Spaniards and they are supposed to be protected by the BLM, but there's lots of shennanigans !!

If you aren't wearing ear protection shooting a .223 you are damaging your ears. Anything louder than a 22 LR out of an 18" barrel and you should be wearing ear protection.

On the other day, if you ignore this, some day your Wrangler will seem a lot quieter.

X2. Take that from a guy with tinnitus with hearing getting bad enough so the wife is getting irritated having to repeat herself.

No didn't read anything, just think about it sometimes when the burros on the upper desert piss and crap in all of the water holes and all of the rest of the animal population have to find another waterhole, but the burros are fine with the water and piss and crap, if the rest can't find a new waterhole, then they die of dehydration, that is all except the burros. See this all of the time when hunting. They would tell a better story than even ballistic gel.

Huh !--I've been shooting/hunting longer than most of you have been around and I STILL enjoy this desert shooting and I don't shoot jackrabits/horses/Hawks/coyotes-or Burrosj-just targets

I'm listing powders, types and weight with different bullets and there's a lot, it will keep me ENJOYING the desert for quite a while !!
