More web wheeling fun...

As if you guys didnt have enough to do with wasting your days here at wf :-)

Alot of you guys know that kyle and I own a good assortment of Jeep related domains that we have been meaning to develop for a long time. We wont get into the full list, unless you really wanna know then shoot me a pm ;-)

Anyway. About a month ago I started looking to hire some writers for a project we were working on. We wanted to compete in the Jeep news site market and knew that with our schedules there was no way we could keep up with enough posting to keep a site fresh enough to keep people coming back. we couldnt find anyone that would work for the 5 cents per news story we were willing to pay. So project was back burnered. So after about 13 consecutive hours of staring at my screen yesterday and pondering what to do. I set out to find a particular type of script.

I found said script and now I am pleased to say that while using the default sytle, www.jeepportal.com is available for your web wheeling pleasure. I would like for you guys to help me test out the script before I go all out on a nice happy jeep related design for it, so that we can get a feel for if it will work for our needs/goals.

For those familiar with digg, Jeepportal uses similar software. It is a social news site. That is it relies on its members to Feed it content, Filter its content, and ultimately Enjoy its content.

How it works:

Users submit stories: Links to other web forums or a blog or an article, write a small description of what the article you are linking to is about and thats it.

These stories then go into the upcoming news queue. Users vote on the stories, either Vote them up, or click the bury button to fend off spam and not worthwhile links and articles.

Once a story has recieved a certain number of votes it goes to the front page as published news.

So in short you as a user submit the news and control the news. The users have 100% editorial control. Once I have people using it and submitting on a regular basis, I can adjust the formulas for what it takes to get to front page to ward off spam and only get true worthwhile content to the front.

For now I have WF feeding it some content on an hourly basis so that there is at least something fresh there to vote on until users take over and start having regular incoming submissions.

This is not a tool simply for promoting WF. I do not care where you submit news from, it can be JF, JU, Pirate, your clubs board, your buddies blog. This is an attempt to bring the best of the Jeep web together in a single place. I recognize as Im sure other website owners will that no one site has it all, and I dont want anyone missing out on something they might find interesting. With that said I encourage you to also promote worthwhile threads from here at WF and let the jeepportal userbase decide what is newsworthy. Any problems or questions or kudos please keep to this thread :-)

Thanks

The Don
