Mosin Nagants anyone?

Hey all, I'm considering buying a Mosin Nagant soon. Some love them, some hate them, but they seem like a fun bolt action rifle that's decently reliable yet can be had for less than $100. So does anyone have experience with this rifle?

They're a dime-a-dozen around here. Average price is in the upper $80's. Take a bore light with you when you go to purchase one. Make sure the chamber/bore/barrel all look good before you buy it. Make sure the action is smooth and doesn't bind. That's really about it. Give it a GOOD cleaning prior to shooting it. They're fun to shoot. Nothing awesome about them, but they have a cool history and ammunition is still plentiful.

Sounds like just what I need then. I don't need anything special, I just want a cheap high powered rifle. Apparently they kick pretty good, but its similar to a 12ga slug?

The 7.62x54r round is the ballistic equivalent of the .30-06. Recoil is also equivalent. You'll want a recoil pad, particularly with one of the carbine variants e.g. the M44, M38, M91/59, which not only kick like #@!! but throw a magnificent fireball at dusk. The 91/30 infantry rifle at the current market price of <$100 is undoubtedly the greatest firearm bargain around. Surplus ammo is still fairly inexpensive, though not the $39.95/spamcan that it was when I stocked up back in '02. My favorite Mosin variant, and the most accurate, is the Finn M39, but you won't find those for $100.

I own one from 1944. Don't have any ammo, never shot it either. I bought it more for the historical piece, but I would love to bring it to the range someday. Problem is, I'm no gun expert and I really don't know what I'm doing I would love to learn someday!

my mosin is great. doenst kick much. i also have an original M1 garand. if you do get a mosin, i would advise to do what i did and sporterize it. i got tired of having a land spear for a rifle. you can buy a monte carlo stock for around 70 bucks, cut about 6-7 inches off the barrell and either put new iron sights or a scope(requires a bolt mod kit 50 bucks). but if you buy a dragoon version, dont change it. the dragoon version is worth more and has a hexagon reciever.

Or rather than waste that much on butchering a piece of history and getting a plastic Chinese stock, you could just keep an eye open for a M38 carbine and wind up with something that preserves the collectors value of the rifle>

I have two of em..... A original WWII long rifle that was well used and the the corrosive ammo has all but removed the rifling . cut the barrel length down to a carbine length and refinished the stock. It shoots great even without much rifling. Shoots good enough that I throw it in the truck for a Back Up Elk huntin rifle..I have Norma ammo.
The other rifle is a newer model carbine, excellent rifling and like new issued condition.
I hand load, but I'm looking for some Surplus ammo just to shoot up..
These guns are kinda crude by some standards, but the idea was function in all weather, and they did that with out shame !! "BH"
