Eh actually it's smart, in fact one of those luxury car companies bmw, mercedes, lexus... can't recall which, has a concept engine with no camshafts. Each valve is independently controlled by the computer with solenoids. The lift and duration of valve opening/closing ideally should be able to be changed throughout the powerband for optimal fuel and power efficiency. Vtec was the first successful and widely used implementation of variable valve timing. Granted it gives you only 2 cam profiles, it still allows you to access more power at higher rpms

I'm just bustin your balls, man

I drove a 2000 prelude in high school, so replacement for displacement is the mantra I'd hear from people that were convinced that more liters equals more betters. Loved it when you get that puppy revved up and both cams engaged, sounded like a whole different engine (and felt like one, too)

I figured lol. I've heard the "there's no replacement for displacement" before, but in actuality if they only understood barometric pressure, and forced induction they would see, every time you double your current barometric pressure you're in fact doubling the displacement. So there is a replacement for an engines stated displacement, and that is forced induction or chemical supercharging.

uhh yeah! what you said times two!

seriously, though, I need to do more reading, you frequently make me feel stupid, and I genuinely appreciate it.

Well that's not my intent and I hope I dont come off that way. I like to teach, and I can't fault someone for not knowing what I myself didn't know a few years ago

No, you didn't come off that way, and I really do genuinely appreciate it, you're one of those people that remind me that I know relatively little and that I should redouble my efforts to learn whenever I start to think I know something.

I remember reading something back when I was young, it was a laminated sign in a classroom, said something to the effect of when you think you know everything, you've learned nothing or something like that. That and socrates or plato saying that the wise man knows he knows nothing.

Basically what it all boils down to is, an engines displacement is calculated by taking the sum of the volume of each cylinder (Pi*bore[aka radius]^2)*(stroke)
This will tell you essentially how much air will fit in the confines of the cylinder between bottom and top dead center.

The pressure of the atmosphere at different elevations will dictate literally how many oxygen and other normal molecules that aren't filtered out by the intake filter will fit in those same confines. If you force more air via turbo or supercharger, or chemically alter the density of air like with nitrous oxide, you will fit more air molecules in the same space as you fit before.

A practical example would be, 1 bar at sea level is the equivalent of approximately 14.7psi, a naturally aspirated engine (normal breathing, no forced induction) will experience roughly that amount of air pressure at several degrees past bottom dead center, once the valves have closed and sealed. If you were running say a turbo set to provide 14.7psi of boost, you're taking natural air pressure and doubling it. Theoretically you'll now be forcing in twice the amount of air as you were before, and thus technically displacing more.

copied and saved.

I think I understand the principle, but I'll have to mess around with those equations to get my brain wrapped around it.

Well the equation was just calculating the operating volume of the cylinder. The normal formula pi*r^2 was applied.

But the density of air normally where you are is the pressure and density that will be inside your engine when the piston is down. So basically its how much air will fit in there. But when you force air into it, you're making the air more dense and packing the air molecules tighter together, thus fitting more air in.

Think of it like an air compressor, the tank being like the cylinder of your engine. When it's empty it still has air, it's just at normal atmospheric pressure, when you add air to it, the pressure increases but the tank remains the same size right? But now there's more air in it.

It's just the volume of a cylinder, figure out area of a circle, 3.14159268*radius to the 2nd power, multiplied by the length of the cylinder
