I'd say so - I consider any profesional driver an athlete.

Formula1
Gran Prix
LeMans
JGTC
Nascar
WRC
CORR

its called endurance! Anyone that has to sit in a 115 degree car for 3+ hours is a true competitor and athlete in my eyes.

I love the way Iquois starts all these threads with a question. Never letting his own feelings out. Isn't there something ensnaring about that?

They are athletes, its been debated before. Those who don't think so, usually are not into racing and don't think of it as a sport.

im totally into racing and consider it a sport. but sitting in the heat three hours doenst (in my eyes) qualify as athletic. hell, if that was the case, construction workers would all be considered athletes. not arguing....just my opinion

I thought anyone that made over a million per year in any sport was called an athlete. Anyways it's not just a driver, it's a team. I think the last I checked teams consisted of athletes. The teams practice and train just like any other sport.

X2, whitebuffalo. If those were the requirements to being an athlete, I would be a marathon man...........

I can still work younger guys into the ground, but I do not think I could hold up to the punishment that pro racers endure. I would like to do a Baja though, harder but slower. I can still hang, but I gotta breath!

That's Texas on the freeway with the windows down. Does that make people without AC in the south Athletes. I personally think they are excellent drivers and have the reaction time of a video gamer but not athletes.

OK, I'm playing Monopoly with my kids........they take forever to decide whether they're going to roll the dice to get out of the corner space, or pay the money. This takes incredible stamina on my part..........focus..........do not get bored & walk away...........do not sleep...........do not yell.............I'm a ath-uh-lete.

Golf is a game. Golf players need a certain type of agility to accurately hit the little ball with the stick. I don't like golf. Buuuuutt, going by the definition, golf players are athletes.

If a golf player can be an athlete, then certainly someone who can hold a left turn for a couple of hours going over 100 mph can be considered an athlete.

I don't want this to be true, I consider an athlete someone who does some physical activity, like running, jumping, swimming, pushing-tackling-grappeling. But going by what the definition of the word athlete, what is......is.

I forget what race it was this year but Brian Vickers lost the power steering on his ride about half way through the race. Trying to get a 3400lb car through a turn at 150mph with no power steering for 150+ laps when the car wants to go straight = athlete.

carl edwards does a backflip off the roof of his car after he wins. does that count as jumping?
