National Anthem

It's Sat. March 3rd, and it's National Anthem Day! The Star Spangled Banner officially became the national anthem on 3/3/31

Surprised a little. Thought some people would talk about the National Anthem and what it means to them.

I'm sorry there haven't been any replies as well but I'm glad you posted. I didn't realize what the day was and when I saw the title I thought it was making fun of someone messing up at a sports event.

Happy birthday anthem, you've come a long way from a poem and beer drinking song.

I always get choked up when I sing it, particularly before sporting events. Two opposing teams start with one common spirit.

Thank you for the heads up on this. I shall sing it while I shower tonight. It is an anthem that does not get the respect that it deserves. I always sing when at a function and it is played. I always look around at other event spectators and see if they are respectful of it. I would say about 20 percent do participate and the other 80 percent have other agendas. I like to sing in the shower and this is a perfect occasion so when my wife hollers for me to shut up I will stand my ground and celebrate the milestone.

Many years ago, as part of my Air Force flight training, I attended survival school. After several days in the woods after a simulated crash, we were "captured" and put into a mock POW camp. After days of hunger and at the point of exhaustion, the "prisoners" were called to the center of the compound in front of a reviewing stand to hear a speech from the "Commandant". He went on about love for his country and his flag and at the end of his speech, he ordered us to turn around and honor his country's flag. As we turned around, there on the flag pole was a flag with 13 red and white stripes and 50 white stars on a blue background.
Someone, I never found out who, started singing the National Anthem. Every man and woman sang out loud and strong and there was not a dry eye in the camp.
This image has stuck with me for the last 31 years and despite of the hoarse and sometime off-key singing, I've never heard a better rendition.

I'm a 37 yr old guy and I'm not afraid to say that I get teary eyed and get a lump in my throat whenever I hear it. Race track, hockey game, doesn't matter.

Thanks for reminding us all of this I should have remembered after 20 in the Military.

Took some enemy fire on a convoy, many many years ago. Cobras and Gun Trucks took care of everything, but I will never forget as we neared our destination, cresting a hill the first thing we saw was the American Flag, it looked as if it were rising up in front of us. To this day whenever the National Anthem is played, even in my living room, by myself, I stand.

It annoys me how often I see people not put their hand to their heart while singing the national anthem. I think there is confusion over whether or not it is required or appropriate, but I take cues from military protocol I have seen. When in civilian clothing, one does not salute. He or she stands and puts hand to heart. I think it is very appropriate, just as with our Pledge of Allegiance.

Our american culture has been diluted by political correctness. However, it's not too late to fix our problems! Do what is right, set an example for others to follow, teach children the meaning of liberty and honor, love one another, and respect the sacrifices of those before us who gave us a free country.

Honor our nation and show reverence to the flag, it stands for the best things we will find in this life.
