Need help with electrical stuff

I have an old Massey Ferguson farm tractor that runs great. The only problem is its 6 volt and the 6volts sometime struggle to get it started. i want to convert it to 12 volt. keep in mind this tractor has a generator not an alternator. coming from the generator is a little black box with a bunch of wires going into it (a regulator i was told). my question is, what do i need to do in order to make it charge 12 volts instead of 6? do i need a different regulator or a whole new generator? im pretty handy so with a little advice im sure i can figure it out. thanks

Does this look like the Massey Ferguson farm tractor forum to you? If so, please see your local Optomitrist.

this is the off-topic section of the forum, therefore not limited to just SWB jeep talk. so since he is a fellow jeeper, let's play nice and offer help if we can(even though it's not for a wrangler). k-thanks.

In less time than it took for you to ask the question, I had a whole page of links that refered to your need. I simply put 6 volt to 12 volt on the address bar, and presto. Imagine that. And I thought all you kids were computer savy. Or is it just easier to ask, then to look it up for your self. The world is at your fingertips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some folks are more computer savvy than others. That's why I don't mind helpin' a fellow jeeper out.

and some of us might have tips/experience that we would share that all those other sites you found might not have. a different perspective from a friendly crowd can make a big difference.

My old 56 F-100 starts on 12v and then runs on 6v. One of those ballast blocks might be a solution for your problem if you can find one. Seems a shame to change over everything if it runs fine on 6 volts.

I'm an electronics technician. What kind of accessories do you have on the tractor? ie lights, the starter, whatever else...

I'm sure you'd have to ditch the generator, voltage regulator, possibly some rewiring, etc...

May I ask why you would want to do this?

because it cranks over soooooooo slllllllooooowwwww and the old engine just needs to turn over a little faster to start easier. im tired of cranking on it for 5 minutes to cold start it everyday. it has no headlights or anything tho, just a generator, regulator, and a starter. also, it is points fire. i've been told that if i get a GM alternator with built in regulator i can eliminate the whole external regulator deal. thats probably the route that im going to take.

oh by the way the old generator quit working and instead of replacing it with another 6 volt generator i just want to convert it while i have to replace it anyway.

I'm not sure that the starter could take the load. Everything else should be good to go though on your swap.

We had an old IH Cub Lo Boy that was 6 volt but then spent the next 30 years as a 12 volt. Same starter.

But if you want another opinion, I'm also apart of a great bunch of tractor owners.

www.mytractorforum.com

They have folks that know a bunch about every tractor made!

Tell them DYT4000 sent you!
