New computer virus - post cards scam

Just found this on one of my other forums.

Quote:
HUGE VIRUS COMING

Hi All, checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus. I checked Snopes (URL above, and it is for real.

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,' regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to let all your contacts know about this. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

I dislike windows. Loved my Mac from the first time I booted it up. It's an old G4 but I wouldn't trade it for a new windows based machine if my life depended on it.

And yet you're afraid of viruses. Seems like a waste of energy.

My next puter will be a Mac.

Maybe I should open the virus so I'll have an excuse.

Tiny, just because you have a Mac doesn't mean you can't get a virus. Macintosh has been quietly advising people with Mac's to get anti-virus software since like 2005. It's still extremely rare... but it happens.

Warnings were first identified in June 2007. It is real, and a good reminder that we should all be aware of what we are doing.

I've had three macs over a number of years, no viruses as of yet so I'm not worried. I also like to keep my work and pictures backed up. Other than that, it's just a computer.

shes a good girl, she doesnt look at bad sites to get viruses on daily basis

but yeah windows is bad..
like few months ago i got a virus of some sort, my hard drive would not boot up. It finds the hard drive but then it freezes. I dont know if its the above virus however it would not boot up.. starts loading, automatically shuts down and starts over again. so i reinstalled windows and wiped the entire hard drive. That worked till a month or two later i got that anti virus 07 program (which is like a virus).. for some of u that are not clear with that scam.. its a program that installs it self without you knowing, no consent or anything.. once it installs it self, it removes almost all your menus from everywhere saying that its for safety because "your computer is infected with a virus".... (cant even change your background image) and you cannot remove the program even if you tried, the only way to get rid of it is to follow a guide online and manually remove each file or completely reinstall windows or at last buy the crappy program.

about a month ago i got another virus that disabled my cd roms.

Currently i'm not even messing arround w/ updating my computer.. I have like 2 programs installed and thats it lol. Next month i'm pretty sure it will happen again so i'll reinstall windows again

Oh and I forgot to mention... only stupid people get viruses.

Tripp, I've been running windows since I've had access to computers. The only time I've gotten viruses is when I let other people use my PC's. Like Tiny, I keep my stuff backed up just in case, and always have a couple of anti-virus software programs.

It really comes down to the user.

Well said.

I built my own computer about a year ago and bought Nod-32 for about $25, all I have to do is keep it updated and I have had no problems. I like Windows and I especially like Windows Vista. People who don't know what they are doing (and Mac owners) give Vista a bad name.
