New Project

Well yesterday I picked up a new project since the jeep is about done for now.

It is a 1978 Austin Mini. I bought it for £120 ($178) It starts, runs and drives nice. There are a few areas that require attention ie. rust. I'll be replacing panels instead of trying to patch the cancer spots. For the price I couldn't pass it up.

The specs on this thing are through the roof.
Curb Weight - 1358 lbs
Engine Size - 998cc
Power - 39 bhp
Torque - 51 ft/lb
0-60 - N/A (top speed is somewhere around 50-55 mph)

well, the color's not cat yellow, but i think you can fix that. nice project. don't forget teh progress pics.

I'm going to fix it all up, drop in a honda b or k series motor and bring it back to the states.

We all jumped in after church and went for a nice sunday drive in the mini. Everyone had a blast. It is very fun to drive.

No its not going to be Cat yellow. It is going to be that metallic blue that they use on dodge vipers and it will have the white or silver mini stripes on the hood and a union jack on the roof.

Here are a few progress pics for you. When we got home from the joy ride we got to crackin. Ya gotta love child labor. I made them do about 50% of the work, but they enjoyed it.

Not for a few years. I hope to go to Japan after this assignment, so who knows when I'll end up state side again.

The steering wheel will stay as it is, on the wrong side.


Edit: Its really small. The kids are 4 and 8 yrs

Is the Honda motor a drop in or is there a lot of fab work to be done for that? You didn't waste any time getting started on it. Keep us updated.

It will probably end up with a lot of fab work. There are companies that make conversion front subframes that bolt right in but they want $2400 for them.

Is the glass to US standards? When I was in Germany we wanted to bring an older BMX back, but the glass was not tempered and by American law it has to be. Might want to check all those standards while you are in the build.

It hasn't changed. The glass still has to meet US standards. I already did that homework with my jeep windshield which I hope to get put in this week sometime.

Well tonight I grabbed the screwdriver and started poking in sensitive areas and found a bit more cancer. I also yanked the fuel tank.











I didn't realize I didn't have any cutting discs and the one on the grinder gave out after only one cut. So I only got one seam cut on the back panel.

Today I got the back panel cut off and put it up on jackstands. Tomorrow I'm going shopping. A mig welder and some new body parts are on the list. I would like to add a plasma cutter to the list to make short work of this but I don't think the wife will sign off on that one.

I also need to find a place to get sheet metal.

Well after a lot of poking around with a screwdriver I've decide there is too much rust on the body. I would be better off getting a new body and at £3200 I'm not going that route. So this one is out.

A week ago last friday I picked up another one in much better shape. The body is great, the interior needs some work and so does the engine. It needs new glass on the sides and doors and the doors need new trim and weather stripping. The best part is its safe and legal to drive so I can drive this one back and forth to work.
