New puppy

so for the past six months Stacey has been bugging me to get her a puppy. then last saturday there was an adoption day at one of the pet supply store in town and needless to say i got a little puppy. Meet Gretta (i didnt get to pick the name) she was rescued with her pup. she has been spayed, all her shots areup to date, and she was obediance trained. plus look at her so cute.
she is 2 years old choc. lab mix.

A guy goes into the vet with his dog, lays him on the table, and the vet comes in and proceeds to examine him. A few moments later, he says, "I'm sorry but your dog is terminally ill and will soon die. There's really nothing we can do. That'll be $100 for my exam." The distraught pet owner exclaims, "There must be something!! Run more tests, get another opinion! Do something!" So the vet says, "Hold on." and leaves the room. A few moments later a labrador retriever enters the room and proceeds to walk around the table, sniffing the dog and giving him the usual doggie once over. The lab then walks out, and in walks a tabby cat. The cat jumps up on the table and proceeds to sniff and examine every inch of the dog. After thoroughly scanning the dog, the cat jumps down and leaves the room. A few moments later the vet re-enters the exam room and says, "I'm sorry, but there's really nothing more we can do at this point, here's a bill for $200." The shocked owner replies, "But you just told me it was $100." And the Vet replies, yeah, but it was another $100 for the lab test and cat scan."

rimshot!

Two years is a great age. That's when labs actually start listening.

Or they never do. They are a curious breed though. Some of the smartest dogs I've met are labs, as are some of the dumbest.

be patient it takes time to sent train a dog. first make sure she stays with u off leash, and if all is well their then i would make sure shes not gun shy. if shes like my shepherd hound mix then she will sit right next to u even if ur firing a 44 mag. but she sure is cute though

well a few weeks ago i introduced miss gretta bear to the .22 blanks i started out ar 30yd away and i got all the way till right over her head with my pistol and she never once flinched. i was happy as could be. then last saturday i grabed my pheasant wings and sent bottle and headed to the park. it took all of about 5min for her to figure out what the game was. then to mix it up i put her on the 50ft check cord and let her find the sent trail. so after all that i tied her up to a near by post set up a 250 ft trail and let her have at it. (keep in mind we have been at this for an hour and it was about 2 above and 20 mile an hour winds). the split second she got down wind of that trail she was on it.i was so proud of her. there might be hope for my little prison puppy after all

we have a golden too but he is the worlds biggest sissy when it comes to the cold and he refuses to obey comands i think he loves to screw with my mind. oh well hes a good dog. i have hunted over all sorts of dogs AKC field champs to little old mutts and labs seem to do better but the guy who trains his own dogs always thinks his mutt is the best thing to ever find a bird.

^ Ha, ha. My guy's a bit of a sissy, too; rather be on carpeting, than anything else. Great guy and great listener; he obeys just to make you happy......and he should. Gettin' old and dealing with Sarcoma's - F'n cancer!!

Enjoy your pup!

yea cancer took my first dog a golden he started out at 145lbs and when he passed away he had droped to 75

i took our 2nd golden hunting just to get her out of the house and see why our 1st lab would dissapere and then come back with feathery goodness. need less to say a 4 month old pup cant move about in 2 ft of snow she ended up in my game pouch for the rest of the day stickin her head out and up on my shoulder. snow plow got her july of 07.

and i now have discovered i have a soft spot for anything fury barks with 4 paws and has a tail

Training and working with
a dog is almost better then hunting

I have a 14 mo old golden ret/yellow lab(ruby)
hybred that I started this season
She is great fun

Our wild pheasants are long gone but we
have a good stocking program
I average around 20 birds a season, only 17
this year because I wanted her to smell/see
the bird before I shot
She seem to like duck/goose hunting better
more swimming less pickers

She works very close and when I shoot
she sits straight down till I say get it

Have fun Its well worth the work

yea we have the same issue here in ohio no more birds but the dnr is working on restockin the public grounds even with a good bird dog you have to walk all day just to get one maybe two flushes and since i love the taste of pheasant i make the one or two we can get in to the air count. i love seeing a dog work in the most unhospitable cover and still get the birds.

but i want to maybe in a year or two start rasin some quail and pheasants at home.
we cant hunt quail here in nw ohio but it would be nice to see them around here

Sweet! I have two chocolates - they are awesome! Nice choice. Oh - one of mine is Ruger! The other, Gunny, is a worker, though we've had to train him not to try to bite the barrel of the gun when we shoot.
