Nifty computer apps.

We had a series of hardware failures that took out everything recently, a good 10 years worth of photos, notes, software, who knows what all else.
Anyway, thanks to a buddy of ours who's a computer tech at a local university (you should see this guys "the pile" it's truly pornographic for a wannabe geek like me ) we were able to get 3 fairly nice machines back up and running with fresh installs of Windows Xp pro and dual booting Kabuntu Linux.
Looking around a fresh install really demonstrates how little truly useful software comes bundled.
I've spent the last couple weeks trying to get these things back up to their former level of time wasting proficiency but it's been a bit frustrating.
I had a bunch of useful apps I'd collected and tweaked over the years that I don't even remember where they came from, let alone what all I did to tweak em so I've been looking a open source alternatives.

What kind of really useful or fun software do you run?
I'll make up a list of some of the more impressive stuff I've been playing with over the next couple days.

Webstuff

http://www.nvu.com/
WYSIWYG HTML editor kinda like Frontpage but open source.

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
A pretty nice FTP client, I'd been using Cute FTp and Cute HTML for my web work for years but I'm not gonna buy it again when this is available.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
Firefox, do I really have to say anything? it's the first thing I install on a fresh comp.

Games

http://torcs.sourceforge.net/
Torcs is a really impressive open source car racing game, I was stunned when I tried this on Linux and happy it's got a Windows port It may not be as pretty as some of the games you find in stores but it's free.

http://supertuxkart.berlios.de/
If ya have kids they'll love Super Tux Kart, Hell, why lie, I have a blast with it too

http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/
I tried this a couple years ago but it didn't run very well on my machine back then, it runs good and looks decent now. Again, it's not as pretty as some of the commercial stuff available but it's free.

General

Rough draft is an excellent word processor if you do much writing. If you use it make sure and get Word web as well, it's a spell checker that comes in handy once in awhile.

http://www.truecrypt.org/
Wanna keep yer pron collection from prying eyes? this'll do it it's pretty good at securing more mundane stuff as as well.

Click Tray calendar is a nifty little PIM that runs in your system tray.

There's a few to get ya started, please add to the list if you have something.

Macs are all kinda cute n cuddly but they're prone to the same hardware failures as pc's, it's just too bad they're so limited on available software.

i run this little guy:

http://www.bayden.com/SlickRun/

he's a little blue bar that just hangs out and lets you tie any location(on pc or web, whatever) to key words. much easier to type say....."porn" in the blue box than navigating to c://programfiles/mystuff/movies/other/...
well, you get the picture!!

and of course i run spybot

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

and adaware

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

both help keep harmful little programs from hurting my machine.

Avast! Anti-Spyware - Free Spyware that works pretty damn good. Self-updating and completly free.

Spybot Search & Destroy - One of, if not THE best spyware tools. Oh, and its free as well.

ALTools - Free software that does it all! Zip utility, Music Player, Photo Viewer, FTP Client, Password Manager..... all of it free!

WinAMP - My favorite music player of choice... again, its free!

TweakUI - This is a little program that will let you mess with Windows a bit. Want to remove the RecycleBin from the dektop? This will do it. Also has a lot of other nice little modifications to make Windows a little more clean.

SyncBack - A free backup program. Allows you to backup everything or just specific files. Has a scheduler. Very nice.

AVG Free - A free anti virus program that works better than both Norton and McAfee. Draws on less background resources and catches all those nasty viruses that are written specifically for the big two AV programs.

America's Army - Free first person shooter. Very nicely done and fun to play. Realistic damage. You can't get shot 12 times and live.
