Well its safer that way as much as it sucks. I leave the wire a bit and I would much rather be a fobbit (not really but you will understand after awhile of doing it), being this is not my first go round. Just be safe and dont trust the nationals.. No matter what anyone says dont trust them. I have one that trys to shoot at us every time we role into the FOB. He is an ECP guard about a mile from our fob and every time we role in when its dark he draws up on us. Just be safe and enjoy.

Well this time of year yeah its F&^%N hot.. I was over there in 08... as the summer comes its only going to get hotter...

If your there come Nov / Dec its cold and wet... snow even at times

I was in KAF when I was over there ... Didint leave the wire... but yeah that country has its own smell, and when that wind kicks up all the sand/dust you can taste it.. not nice.

Be safe over there, enjoy your time back at the wire while your there, if you get out most wish they were back.

They do have armor underneath. An IED is going to tear one up but the occupant survivability is good! The MRAP is more heavily armored than a HUMVEE but they are just making bigger IED's that tear them up pretty good. The MRAPS are also very heavy and get stuck in soft sand and flip over very easily, and are too big for narrow streets(urban warfare). The cost difference is immense, $250,000 for an up-armored HUMVEE vs $1,000,000 for an MRAP.
As far as you calling the HUMVEE a crappy vehicle I have to disagree with you. I have worked in the factory that builds them for fifteen years and we take pride in the vehicle we build and have a lot of testimonials from our armed forces praising our vehicle.
OK I'm done. Feel better now!!!
Im going to have to disagree with this. I just got back a few months ago. We (US forces) are no longer allowed to use the HUMVEE over there and for good reason. We gave them all, for the most part to our Afghan partners to better protect them. In terms of small arms fire, they hold up great but with IEDs there were no good against. Unfortunately, many of our Afghani counterparts didnt make it, even with the smallest IEDs. In the MRAPs, specifically the MAXXPRO (the one pictured earlier in the post), US Forces were documented to survive an over 200lb'er, albeit worse for the wear.

The HUMVEE is an outstanding off-road vehicle. I've seen that thing drive through some craziness that I doubt almost any Jeep on this forum could get through, but I wouldn't be caught dead riding in one in any type of conflict. I'd hoof it over riding in that thing any day.

That being said, stay safe over there, brother. Trust your spidey sense. If it dont feel right, it probably isnt. I went by the motto, "I love you, but I love me more." Just follow that and you should be just fine!

I also saw Toyotas on the tops of mountains doing things you would scratch your head at. It's amazing what you can do with rocks.

This is funny but at the same time I feel your pain. Not sure if it's just the culture or whatever but the nerve of a lot of them damn Afghans is just ridiculous. Drives you nuts.

OK, I'll be the typical a-hole on any post like this. Keep OPSEC in mind. You've had a more recent briefing than I have, but don't post anything you shouldn't.

My roomate is training on the M1200 armored knight this week. Seems like a pretty legit vehicle.

Hey we have one that has the duals on it. But a majority of our MAXPros have like 52 (I think) singles all the way around and can barley pull themselve out of a wet paper bag. The MATV is were its at. And I dont think you have violated any OPSEC.
