not to be morbid, but.....

my sisters dog is pretty old and she said he's been acting pretty strange lately and can barely get around. i'm affriad he's not gonna make it too much longer. she'll want him burried out back with a nice little "headstone" if you would. not the kind that comes up outta the ground. but one that just lays over it...... has anyone ever burried a dog? how deep should i dig the hole? i feel horrible even asking all this. i grew up with this dog my whole life.

Bury him a couple of feet down and place the stone directly over the fresh earth. Make it heavy and it'll keep anything from digging him up (which depending on where you live is a problem). I've buried many family pets over the years (lots of farm cats). You learn how to keep them in the ground. A large flat stone seemed to work best.

I'm sorry the dog isn't doing well.

Yea, about 2-3 feet down, if I went any deeper I'd need dynamite, we have a little cemetery up on the back corner of our property. Two dogs, a ferret and 4 rescue kittens that didn't make it. When I buried my German Shepard who I had for 10 years I put him about 4 feet down. I dug up enough rocks to make rock blankets then used a rock hammer to make rough headstones from the larger rocks.
