Opinion Poll: How to break the news...

Ok, so here is the scoop:

My wifey and I are taking our 3 kiddos (11, 7, and 5) to Disney for a week and a half. We started planning back in April and have (somehow) been able to keep it a secret from the kids. Simply put...they have no idea whatsoever !!! We are driving there and leave Christmas day...

The plan is: 1) let them wake up run around and do the normal Christmas traditions; 2) open the presents under the tree, which will be surprisingly sparse (the rest will already be packed in the Expedition); 3) when they realize that "that is it" under the tree, line them up, turn on the camcorder, and...

fill in the blank. What would you do?

My first thought is to tell 'em "Ok, upstairs and get dressed! We are going to Disney! Right now! Go! Go! Go!" And then watch them kill each other scrambling up the stairs.

how far of a trip is it?

I say make them think they are going to go on a really bad trip to go see paint dry or something and get them on video being total stinkers about it.

When you get close turn the cam back on and get their reactions on camera as you pull up to Disney land.

I would have packed them in a box and shipped them to Orlando already. Then the little woman and I would have a nice drive down.

Funny thing is that they have an Uncle Chuck...and Christmas day is his b-day

Dunno...still leaning towards the original plan. Figure this'll be a once in a lifetime thing for them...it has to be memorable...

I say one of the gifts under the tree should be thier favorite disney character. Then ask them if they would like to go see them for real. Tell them that you have an idea...ask them if they would like to go to Disney....act like you just came up with the idea. I did that with my kids with something else, but could have the same outcome.

They will not beleive that you are really going to Disney...but they will start to beleive you around 500 miles into the trip.

I hope this makes sense. Hey, if you pass thru Atlanta, give me a shout.

I think you will have a tough time trying to put on epast an eleven year old. I find it increasingly difficult to put anything past my son these days and he's 10.

Put the whole thing around from their perspective. How would you like or not like to be informed?

Personally, I like your idea. Let them know before you start out and this will create a buzz for then next 1300 miles....which is a long drive with three kids... my hat's off to 'ya on that one. Make sure you bring some brochures for all the kids to look at on the way because they are going to hound you for all the details.

Of course, you could always try it the other way and surprise them when you get there. I would tend to think the ride out would be relatively boring and stressful.. If you tell them before you go, you maintain child control along the way.... "Timmy, you slap your sister one more time and you'll be sitting in the parking lot od Disney World while we all have fun without you."..... I think you would probably only have to say this once and they'll all dummy up and act like saints the whole way.

Have a great time and remember to try to enjoy the traveling portion of your trip. Stop at some of the goofy places along way and enjoy some of the back roads and local culture.

Leave 'em all there and spend the cash on a most excellent wheelin' trip to the Imogene Pass.

My thoughts exactly. They can stay with their Uncle Chuck while you're gone. They would never know.

Man, I have a 3 yr old of my own. I wouldnt tell em before hand you are going. If you do, you are going to have 1300 miles of constant yapping about it. i would pout em in the truck and just tell em you are going somewhere new. Wait untill you drive by the park on Harbor Ave. It goes right by the park. They will be so excited once they realize where they are.

Thats what we did for my son a while back and it was worth every moment to see that look on his face when he realized where he was at.

My parents did this to me once when I was about 13. It was for a trip to Cozumel over Christmas break. They put little trinkets in my stocking and Christmas presents that led me down the path and then the final gift I opened was something that was blatantly obvious that I was getting to go on a trip to Mexico. It was great stuff for a kid.
