Paper Ships

Hey ccain, what do you do when you're not working on the jeep?

Well, I'll tell ya... I build little ships outta paper.

Here is (from left to right) CV-41 USS Midway (under construction), ROU-02 Pedro Campbell guided missile detroyer (Uruguayan Navy) and DE-791 USS Maloy destroyer escort all in 1/300 scale. All made from card stock.

USS Maloy

Maloy and Campbell

And a few pics of the construction of the USS Midway:

I'll post up more on the progress of the Midway.

Thats about the coolest model making I have seen in a long time. I built shelf mount model railroads, switching setups in N scale but nothing like that paper work...

That looks very tedious, very nice work though. Is it therapy or just a hobby.

CC- Awesome job, I make paper models as well, but they all look like really obscure comets or baseballs what have been hit with a lawnmower.

Seriously, that is very cool work..i have no artistic talent.

Art and writing are not my thing.

Thanks everyone! I guess you could say it's a form of therapy... I mean, when I'm working on them I don't think so much about killing people.

I picked up the hobby quite a few years ago and have built everything from large scale spacecraft to cars and characters... But I really liked building the ships, so I guess they kind of stuck.

It can take anywhere from a few days (if I have had lots of coffee and negate sleep) to a few months. I have a feeling, with the progress I'm making, in short bursts, the Midway may be done in a couple of weeks. Since Tiny keeps draggin' my ass down to the beach, it may take longer.

I've been bouncing around the idea of building a large scale ship that can be remote controlled, constructed of wood and fiberglass, but I will need a shop for that one. So, that's a ways off. But we have a local duck pond that would be perfect for the Christening and the ducks are ripe for the picking! I wonder if I can tool up some scale 5 inch guns that would take a 9mm shell?

Ok, well... I'm gonna go and lay my tired, sun burned carcass on the bed and watch TV now. Good night gang!

Doesn't tiny have a shop?

Since you are in Cali, you might want to go with a BB gun barrel/internals, to save from the hassel. But a nice 800ft per second rifle barrel and internals should do just fine for a duck

Just posting an update of the progress of the USS Midway...

Don't mind the yellow...

Just a few details here and there to sort out which equates to about another weeks worth of work and then she's ready for paint. Then I have to build a few squadrons of tiny paper airplanes.

That's an amazing talent you've got there, Chris. Your attention to detail is second to none. Someone said earlier about making a paper Jeep. Have you given that any thought? I GUARANTEE you could sell them on the forum if you wanted to invest that much time.

Thanks cave... It's not so much talent. Anybody could do it. It is however a form of nerve medication... Well, that and beer!

But to answer your question... I do have a couple of Jeeps waiting in the wings... An old Willys MB and a TJ. But I really love to build these damn little ships. Funny thing about it is, the closest I ever came to being in the navy was when I went fishing on the head boat. You'd think I'd be building scale armor like tanks and stuff.
