park ranger

So I was curious if any one on here was a park ranger? Seems like something some one that belongs to this board might be into.

The Federal government want you to have at least a Bachelor's degree to become a Park Ranger.

What I want to know is why so many of the Rangers I've encountered have been so anti-offroad & just go overboard on how they react to offroaders. I was out in a remote desert area with some other Boy Scout leaders with a bunch of our young Scouts and this lady Park Ranger started reading us the riot act. Why? Because ONE vehicle in our group was an ATV with only a Green sticker & registered street-legal vehicles were required in the area. A ticket is one thing, the harsh treatment she gave the young Scout riding it & the rest of us was quite another.

That has happened a few times, another was in Death Valley. We were a small group of Jeepers & we got stopped for something minor & the Ranger acted like he was going to arrest us all. Finally, one of my friends in the group produced his FBI Special Agent badge & said "Aren't you taking this a little too far?". That got us off but wow, I've just seen too many over-reactions by Park Rangers to what should have been a simple infraction that may require a ticket at the most.

wow that sucks for them to be such pricks. I live less than a mile from a state park and would love to have to drive my tj around all day bothering people about fishin licences and such. lol I would get fired for giving to many warnings and no tickets. The rangers were I live just sit in there trucks and smoke or bother people hiking and fishing.
thanks for the info 2 years school doesnt sound too bad

Park rangers have too muh power. If you have a sherriff and a park ranger together guess who has more power? The ranger, he is a Federal Officer so if he really wanted to they could sit in the side of the road and give you speeding tickets or even give you a DUI. All they can't do is transport a person, out here in Wa they are radiculous. I got two tickets from a ranger who was just out to get everyone at the swimming hole. Not a fan in my book, couldn't make it into the real force so now they have a grudge to change th world as a Park Ranger

I must be lucky. I have never had a bad experience with a park ranger. Even got one to side with my on an issue of me riding my mountain bike and a equestrian rider. The horse person stated that my bike spooked the horse andthat I should not been on the trail. So I was in violation for not giving the right of way on a multi use trail. The ranger stated that I had every right to be there on the trail and right of way goes for all parties. Other times, park rangers have been very cool to me and my freinds when we are out goofing off.

yes and no. not all park rangers are federal employees. only the ones who are rangers for national parks. those who work for state parks are state employees, and the county parks are county employees. if i remember correctly, technically just any old park ranger can not ticket you. park ranger is kind of a general term. there are lots of titles to have in the park service, and they have their own kinda police force. those are the ones who can ticket you, and arrest you and so forth. now i havent gotten to this part of my schooling yet, just a very quick over view, so i would love for some one more enlightened and studied to verify or correct this.

CORRECTION: park ranger is not a general term, it is actually a pretty clearly defined job tittle. however it tends to be used as a general term to encompass a large variety of park employees

I've had the exact opposite experience and have never had a problem with a park ranger . . . they've always seemed really cool and laid back to me. Back in my wild days, a buddy and I got pulled over by a Ranger in Yosemite . . . we were in the wrong and riding too fast . . . the Ranger was so cool . . . he totally could have just wrote us up, but he talked to us a bit instead about protecting the wildlife, ourselves, etc. Stuck with me more than any ticket I've ever received. I've had a ton of interactions with Rangers over the years as I've always loved being in the outdoors and I've never walked away with a bad taste in my mouth. I always got the feeling that perhaps being out in nature most of the time vs. dealing with criminals like most cops, sheriffs, etc was what kept them more laid back.
