Dude...go to paypal.com and ebay.com and change your passwords asap. You fell for the oldest trick in the book and just gave them your passwords if you clicked on the links from the email.

If your Paypal or Ebay is linked to your bank account, you need to contact your bank and give them a heads up...they send you that email to trick you into believing you need to dispute something, then you click the links to go login and dispute it and when you attempt to login, it'll show a login failure or whatever but what it's doing is sending your username and password to them so they can clean out your accounts (in other words, you were on a FAKE login screen that LOOKS like Paypal/Ebay). If you ever get an email like that you think is weird... instead of clicking the link in your email (NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVVVEEEERRRRR DO THAT!), manually type in http://www.paypal.com oin your address bar, login there, and see if there's any notices when you login.

If you can't access paypal or ebay by typing their addresses in via the address bar above...it's too late and they've already changed your passwords on you. Try using their "forgot your password" methods and if you manage to get both accounts back...change your passwords to something new ASAP (NOT your old one) and then also check and make sure they didn't change your contact email to theirs for the purpose of hijacking your account again later.

Also check to see what bank account info is in each account...if you have any credit cards saved or bank accounts, call and let the banks know. They may need to reissue you new numbers/cards.

Unfortunately, like the others mentioned, this is a very old scam called "Phishing". The email you got was a very clever fake - designed to get you to enter your username and password so that the people on the other end can then use that information to drain your account dry. Luckily, you had an old card associated with it and they shouldn't be able to get money from you.

I see this sort of attack *a LOT* in my line of work, and not always with ebay/paypal etc. They have also been know to fake bank websites etc... They can be very, very convincing. A couple of rules to live by are:
1 - Ebay, Banks, Paypal etc. will NEVER ask you for your password in an email. If they are asking for it, it is a scam.

2 - always be sure that whatever web page you are entering information on is displayed as an "HTTPS" address, and that you see the little lock symbol - both denoting that the site is secure. For the most part, you will be safe if you see these things... but still use good judgement (make sure the URL address says exactly the right address etc.)

Don't feel bad about getting taken in by the email - I have seen some really smart people get suckered by them and lose money. Ebay and Paypal are, for the most part, safe to use... You just need to be cautious with them or any other online monetary transactions.

the problem with the email was that i didnt check it until 12/12 and i recieved it and the money was taken out on 12/8.. i didnt click the link in the email that said click here if youd like to dispute the transaction.. i actually went directly to the paypal website to sign in but when i tried my old password didnt work and i couldnt sign in.. i called paypal today and talked to a claims guy and he said there was no transactions done through my paypal account since november of 08.. heck the email address that the email was sent too was my other email account and not the one i used for my paypal (i forgot which one i used and didnt realize i used a different one until after talking to the guy from paypal)

it took me about 5 minutes at my bank to get it taken care of, some business locally got hacked and this had happened to more than one person.. and its not the first time.. tj maxxs computers got hacked last xmas and my mom and sisters accounts were hacked like mine was this year.. so it was either dominos, pizza hut, comcast, or a gas station that had their systems hacked

i have not used my current credit card # online since i received the new card nor did i ever take the time in updating it on my paypal account.. im a little smarter than that surprisingly..

Glad to hear that it all worked out for you. I have a seperate account that I use only for online transactions. It is a credit union and they don't let you use it if the money is not in the account. So when I make a transaction on the computer, I transfer just enough to cover it into that account. That way if anyone does get the info, they can't do any harm.
