I've noticed this alot on this particular forum. It's supposed to be a forum for info and to help people, but it seems to be packed with smart a$$es.
Maybe some newbies don't know what to search for and which of the hundreds of different answers is correct for a given question.
I am a member on other auto forums and this one seems to be the only one where a member can be rude, sarcastic, condecending, and post political/religious BS, unabashed. (not related to Jeeps- BTW)
Grant it, I have no problems finding answers for any issues I have, but some members may have little or no mechanical knowledge. So, they come here for help. Some get it, some dont.
I dont just assume someone is lazy because thay ask a question before doing a search, but it looks like majority here think opposite. Oh well. Peace!!

Go read on Jeep Forum or Pirate Bulliten Board (pirate4x4) and you would have a much different opinion of this forum, if you think that we're packed with "smart asses" or whatever. This crowd hasn't made a good point but they are just being rough on the guy because some people just don't like to hear complaints.

You should try Pirate4x4.Com - The largest off roading website in the world.. As implied, it's the largest off-roading related forum on the internet, and contains some of most detailed, most helpful and most in-depth information you will find anywhere.

Just delete your current account and re-register as a female Jeeper. Then, NO ONE minds if you ask that 1000 times asked question before. Members will be falling over themselves to answer your post. I guess it's lonely out there on the trail.

Everyone has their own rules that they use to determin if/how they choose to answer a given question.

Lets use an example of: "Whats the biggest tire that will fit on a stock ____?"

Thats an innocent enough question. Anyone new to the forum could reasonably be expected to ask that question. Actually almost EVERY new member asks that exact question. In fact....that question occurs several times a day. get the point?

Ok...so on one hand we have a genuine desire to learn. On the other hand we have routine questions popping up like Wack-a-mole. Between the two are....US. Lots of folks who have asked that very same question. Got flamed for doing so. And have answered the question for others...many times.

FOR ME...when I see that question, I look at the number of posts the indiviual has under their belt. If its less than about 10...they are a true newb and have been on less than a day and quite likely have yet to discover the search feature. So I try to answer to be the best of my limited ability AND I tell them about the search feature....two-birds...one-stone. If they have more than about 10 posts then its apparently just about being lazy.

Admittedly, sometimes I ask questions that have already been answered. But I do the search beforehand because I REALLY dont like looking stupid. I ask the question, again, to find out if there is any new information. For example: "Any recent feedback on ____tire?" Cuz if the prior questions havent been updtated then the information might be old and new information may be available. I typically start my question with: "I searched the threads and/but ____"

Then there is the issue of attitude. There are a lot of great folks on this forum with a tremendous amout of information and a healthy serving of humor, as well. But this is a relatively representative sampling of the outside world. Some folks are nice. Some arent. Unlike the outside world where the not-so-nice folks get squeezed out of their community, here (unless they violate a policy) they get a voice. Unfortunately, that voice is often used to try to drag others down in a effort to build up whatever is lacking in the rude persons self esteem. There is no constitutional right to not be offended. Grow a thicker hide and get over it. Rude people exist everywhere.

My personal practice is that if I feel the need to be....unpleasant....I generally use a passive agressive technique such as directing ascornful or sarcastic observation towards myself...point out my own ignorance...make fun of my mistakes....and hope that, by reflection, my intended target can see how they are demonstrating a similarly undesirable trait and they have the opportunity to ponder possible improvement without feeling cornered.

Often, the target lacks the resources, capacity or the integrity to do so. In which case I just get over it and move on.

Remarkably effective and thearapeutic process....moving on.

Can I also add that, using google and using "wrangler forum" and then your normal search will find the threads on here (better than the build in search function) and also on JF and pirate, and sites like 4x4xplor.

That is simply a matter of respect for yourself and those around you.

So, when someone starts an incoherent thread that does not have any remote level of basic punctuation, which has evidently been "txt msg" via a cell phone, while eating a pizza, while driving 20mph over the speed limit in a neighborhood crowded with running children, it is very obvious the poster has no respect for themselves, or the time/knowledge of the people whom they expect to do their homework for them.

I will spend several hours over several days, even weeks, researching, reading, measuring, thinking and then repeating to gain basic knowledge on a topic I'm interested in....if I have a question to ask, I try to make it an educated question.

There are very detailed write-ups, instructional how-to's, videos, build threads and other sources of information. There are loads of information available to you - it's up to you to apply yourself and learn.
Agreed about the incoherent thread,, that's when I become sarcastically humorous.. Research, agreed. And it is obvious when they have done so and are asking the either/or questions...

Another thing that make it frustrating when trying to help someone -
Not responding as to how the advice worked.
And not even trying it.

When we tell someone to clean his battery cables and his attitude is "I don't want it to be that" there's no helping him.

And after telling him something he never responds if it did the trick or not.

We need to keep a list of those pigs.

Incoherence or is it incontinence? - Proofreading what they write is a lost art!
