Pet lovers... What are you thoughs about this?

San Marcos cop, who made insensitive remarks, will not be fired.

Officer Paul Stephens has been reprimanded for telling a dead dog owner that he should "chill" and he could "just buy another one."
By Michael Board
Thursday, August 21, 2008

A San Marcos Police Officers, who told a speeding driver that his dead dog was no big deal and he "could just buy another one," will not be fired, despite calls from all over the world, demanding his termination.

"Imagine if your family had been killed or injured by a speeding driver who had not been stopped in a similar situation," Mayor Susan Narvaiz said today.

She says Officer Paul Stephens has been reprimanded, has been given more training and has apologized.

Michael Gonzales was clocked driving nearly 100 miles per hour south on Interstate 35, August 5th. Officer Stephens saw him weaving in and out of traffic, slowing and speeding up, and eventually pulling off at Center Point Road, where he came to a halt in the middle of the access road.

As he approached the car, Gonzales jumped out, started waiving his hands, and shouted "she's dead, she's dead."

When Officers Stephens learned it was a dog, not a human, that was dead, he told Gonzales to "chill" and said "it's no big deal."

While The pair argued in the road, a backup officer, Officer Joyce Bender, spoke with the passenger, and even tried to give the dog "Missy" CPR. The puppy was apparently choking on food. Bender wrote in her report that she thought the dog was dead.

The incident became a talking point for animal lovers, who called for Officer Stephen's job. An on line petition, called "Friends of Missy," said an animal's life is just as important as a human's life... and if there was a person dying, the officer would have reacted differently.

Mayor Narvaiz says the people who have been phoning in death threats should get a life.

"People shouldn't be immediately be fired, in any profession, unless there's a history that shows they should."

Officer Stephens is an Iraqi War vet, who joined the police force in 2007, after leaving the military.

"I ask you to think about would you have done, with the limited information that you had at hand," Mayor Narvaiz said. "And you had sworn to protect the people of the city."

Too bad people don't get as upset over abused children and abortion as they do about a choking puppy.

Not going to get on my soapbox for this one (but I could...), I just going to say that as much as you love your pet, it's still not human and should never be treated as one.

ya really, pretty lame. actual people, mothers fathers or childred could've been killed by his erratic unsafe driving. for a dog. i would've told the guy the same thing as i gave him as many tickets as i could think of.

Doing a hundred miles an hour to get to the vet faster? Driver should've definitely been cited for reckless driving. I don't think the officer should've been fired either. In the grand scheme of things he really could've easily done way more damage to the public safety of the other drivers including himself, his passenger, and the officer involved by driving in the manner he did.

Trying to help your pet and risking one's life and that of others don't go hand and hand.

The dog was already dead when he pulled him over?!

He should have arrested him on the spot, if he resisted, he should have shot him. Moron.

Officer should be given a commendation for protecting public safety and not loosing his cool and pistol whipping this irresponsible jerk off!

Personally I would have ripped the buthead an new rear orifice for putting all those other people at risk. I'm an animal person, got 6 cats and a dog right now, all of them rescue animals. In fact I think the cop should get a 'attaboy' for showing his restraint and not putting that guys face in the pavement and slapping the cuffs on.
Lest you be confused it also pisses me off when cops or ambulances run red lights and other stupid moves. I was an EMT for 5 years.

I'm sure she'll give equal time to the hero LEO who stopped this public safety menace from terrorizing our streets over a dog which had already expired.

Yeah... And I bet if he looks under his chair, he'll find a "Brand New" dog taped under it.

San Marcos is where the RICH (REAL RICH) people live and expect the police to kiss their A**. They think of the police in the same way they think of the janitor at work. The problem is that he gave the bitch a break and didn't write him the ticket. Let no good deed go unpunished. Rookie mistake! That's why I like working the getto...I know what I'm getting up front and so do they.

san marcos, tx is by no means rich. its a college town. and the cop did give him the ticket (a judge dismissed it).

i dont think the guy had any business going that fast all the same. the cop was kind of a dick about it...but thats what cops do . i've dealt with worse, for less.

asking for the guy to get fired is IMO asinine. as are death threats

Have you BEEN to San Marcos?? Holy crap, tis an average place...

Yeah...100 MPH weaving in and out of traffic on 35? Certainly should have been arrested on the spot. Sorry 'bout the dog, but risking others on that very busy highway is no excuse.

Read it again...he did 100 MPH on Highway 35 in San Marcos, TX. The speed limit thru there is 70 MPH. The biggest problem there is that I35 gets massively congested...weaving in and out while speeding is NOT safe.
