DVD disc = ~4.7GB

HDD of 500GB = ~100 DVDs

500GB would be the smallest external hard drive I would buy. When I end up replacing my current tower, I'm going to be getting a laptop and a couple of external drives for all of my data.

I'm a big fan of SeaGate and WesternDigital hdd's and you can usually find some very nice deals on them in BestBuy ad's and other brick and mortar stores.

good question! ive somewhat wondered this myself. ive wanted to get an external for the sole use of music and movies. then just go steal all my friends stuff. that way i dont have to take my laptop to their house, or borrow their cd's and dvd's and put em on my pc.

Most movis come ondouble layer DVDs and are about 6-7 GB big, the rest is bonus material and other things.
one of these DVD movies converted into H264 or DIVX codec is only about 800-1000 MB small.
converting one DVD takes about 10 minutes with my 8-core 3.2GHz Mac Pro, my Dads 2-core 2.6GHz Macbook Pro needs more than an hour for that.
depending on your computer and the amount of DVDs it can take many weeks to convert all your DVDs.
a 1 TB external HD is big enough for 1000-1200 movies.
connected to a small and cheap and silent Mac Mini that´s a very big media station if it´s connected to your plasma TV and surround system.

I don't know about movies but

We have been keeping all the photos we collect form JJUSA events since I started JeepTales.com on 100gb drives. To date we have over 220,000 pics and some of the files are huge!

Now; I do start a new drive each year to help catalog them.

I have another 250gb drive that has about 215 CDs up in my office that holds all my music. That way then I go to work or on a trip I have all the tunes I could ever want. It works great and if one of my laptop takes a dump I don't loose all this data.

I love them!

@jeeptales:

please don´t forget to backup your photos and other stuff. a HD is damaged very fast and most people don´t think about that.
