It originates with the German Sturmgewehr 44 - direct translation is Storm Rifle, more accurate translation is Assault Rifle. It was designed and built as an individual rifle capable of sustained fire for storming positions, hence the name. This is the gun both the Kalishnokof and Armalite were modeled after, the ruskies in 47 (duh) and us some 15 years later with the modification of the AR10 to a smaller cartridge, abondoning the piston system for a gas impingememt system allowing higher rates of fire than either of the others, some 800 rnds/min. They have also been proven to be great as a general squad weapon and defensive weapon, as US military instalations often use M-16A2 models for base security patrols.

This does NOT invalidate the rest of your comments, these (modern sporting rifles) are nothing but their nuedered cousins...

So here I couldn't agree more. Assault weapons are already registered, they must be select fire to earn that title by originating definition. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, and a rifle by any other name is still a rifle.

And I don't mean this specifically at ya GCDMD, or anyone else in particular, but so that some folks can MAYBE begin to understand some truths of firearms.
I won't be holdin' my breath.
