Question for our MILITARY men and women...

So my brother-in-law gave me one of his old hats he wore in the service, sort of this "desert" hat, but your typical camouflage colors. I'm pretty sure he wore it while serving in the field.

Anyway, given that this isn't just some generic camo-printed hat that came from your typical army surplus store, and is actually an authentic garment worn by our military, I'm not so sure I reserve the right to wear that hat, considering I've never been in the military. In my mind, I didn't earn the right to wear this hat.

So, my question is whether it would be disrespectful to those who have served in the military if I wear this hat. Let's hear some opinions before I unintentionally disrespect our soldiers.

As a vet, as long as you aren't wearing a full blown uniform and representing your self as a service member, or vet I don't have a problem with it.

Also a vet, I don't see a problem with it either.. If he gave it to you i'm sure he was okay with you wearing it.

Anyone can buy authentic military items and wear them, if its just a hat I highly doubt anyone will care

I'm currently in the army and I don't care when I see someone wearing an army hat or other stuff. It's sometimes a cool conversation.

Okay, thanks, everyone. I'm sure you can all understand my apprehensions about it, as it falls into that "We're Not Worthy" category. My feeling about it was that the uniform was earned, not freely given away, and I didn't do my part to earn the right to wear it.

Not a problem provided it has no insignia or designations that are earned

If I were gonna pose, would I ask in the first place?

It has some sort of stamp or something on it but I can't recall what it is. The hat is in a closet so I'll have to locate it. I guess since he gave it to me he doesn't have a problem with me wearing it bit I don't wanna disrespect someone else, ya know?

By asking first, you've earned the right to wear the patrol cap/boonie. Like the others have said, as long as there is no rank or other insignia on it, it should be fine to wear. It was nice of him to give it to you.

Also a vet, lots of good advice in here, figured I'd kick my 2 cents in. Long as you make sure to remove any rank or other insignia, you should be fine.. Anyone has a problem with it, just tell em that it was a gift from your B-I-L and that its just a hat.. Anyone that's gonna have a problem with a hat that you're just wearing for the hell of it/comfort, can suck eggs

It'll make a damn fine offroad hat

I think I'm gonna wear it with pride! Even if it didn't really mean anything to my BIL, it means something to me. If it were my hat, I don't think I'd be as likely to give it up so easily, though. I'm a bit perplexed as to why he gave it up.

While he's retired now, he is still a contractor who works very close with the military.

Agree with the team above. I appreciate you asking; just look good wearing it.

Haha, I'm not suggesting anything lol. I have a younger brother/friend that tried to pull something like that to get a chick.. Needless to say, he won't try again.

Have fun, wear the cover, be proud. The fact that you, a civilian, actually want to wear it for legit reasons, when I know so many in uniform that don't want to.. Well.. I'm honored. Personally though, I do know it's not against the law for it to have rank insignia(you need a full uniform to break that, and/or claiming the rank is your rank), and I would keep it on if I were you. Looks more official, and you might hear a good story or two out of it. That's just my two cents.

Wear the hat. Most vets, myself included, aren't going to hassle you about it. The fact you are asking first, speaks for your character.

Just don't tell any stories that start out, "There I was...."

Okay, so I found the hat and while I thought there was an insignia on it, there is not. I'll post a pic of the hat later.

Even though Jon gave me the hat, I certainly don't question his immense patriotism. As for people posing as soldiers, NOT cool!

Vet here as well. I've given some of my old covers to my youngest son and assorted nieces and nephews so I don't see a problem with you wearing one. As far as your B-I-L giving his away, sometimes you have so many issued items that they threaten to take over your storage and start eating small pets. Wear it with pride.

Wear it proudly to share a proud story of family history from which it came.

I agree with all the others. Wear it with pride in your country. This is coming from a 9 yr veteran.
