Quick Research question: need your input

QR Codes. They look like the image below.
You use your smart phone and scan them, and they take you to a web site, video, etc. They're popping up all over.

So I am curious.

Have you ever scanned one of these?

Would you ever use this? Say if you were shopping and it said "for more info on this product, ..."

Or is this a neat technical idea that's just too annoying to bother with?

What's your opinion, you Jeep owners you?

I'd prefer just having the info for the product instead of the bar code and fancy packaging. I think everyone should have a bar code tattooed on their arm. ID, driver's license, passport, scan your arm and your good to go.

I was in NY in August, and they had them plastered around the waiting areas in the Empire State Bldg, scan 'em and they send you to mobile web sites pertaining to the building's construction.

I also use one in my email signature at work. If you scan it, it will allow you to add all of my work contact info to your phone contact list with one click.

Also, when I have a large photo displayed somewhere, sometimes I'll stick one in the corner that will take you to a website where you can see it, read info on it, and order prints and whatnot if you want.

Why not just show a web site address so everyone can get the info.. I mean how crazy would that be...

So do phones now have scanners built in? Do they still make phones that allow you to speak with another person?

yes, i have scanned one of these.

yes, i would, and have, used it whilst shopping.

yes, it is neat.

i like them, but i am not sure if it is because i have only had my smartphone for a few months and the novelty has yet to wear off, or whether i actually "like them, like them" .

A quick scan would be far faster than opening your mobile web browser and entering the web address -- especially if you were pointing to something specific like something.com/something/something.html rather than something.com.

Not to mention it's a good way to save the address for later if you don't want to look at it until you get home. Rather than having to write down the address, just take a picture of the barcode. You have the option to scan an existing photo, not just straight off the camera.

JeffK: based on your avatar, and the html code, I'm gonna guess you're kind of a nerdie techie. Not that there's anything wrong with that. So you put this QR on your email. Has anyone actually ever used it? Or is it still just, um, kind of showing off?

(is that strict xhtml when you add the &nbsp;/ after <twitch />? )

THANKS EVERYONE!!! GIVE ME MORE RESPONSES PLEASE.

If you haven't guessed, my boss discovered these codes and he wants me to start doing kewl things with them. I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm a nerd. On the other hand, meh.

Yeah, I'm definitely a nerd. Software engineer, actually.

Trailing slash in XML is used to define an element that doesn't need both an opening and closing element (ie it doesn't enclose anything). So in HTML, even though <br> works, technically it's correct to use
<br />.

I only know a couple of people that actually used it (the QR code), but since I'm a software engineer working for a large company, I don't really deal with the public directly. There's no real need for it in my case, it's just cool.

I fixed that for you.

(and I'm just yanking your chain. I'm a nerd too, and I'm married to a software engineer, so it's 100% geek talk around my house).

You got it exactly right. I'm sure I'd be pretty low on the list of public faces, wearing jeans and a t-shirt that says I'm no longer considered a danger to society, string-and-bone hei matau, riding a motorcycle back and forth to work every day...

Heh. Way better than wearing a suit!

Eh I could see how they could be useful if my Palm Pre actually had auto focus. Luckily I'm getting the Evo this month so we'll see how much I like them. If i'm actually browsing on my phone I'd rather just click a link. If I'm out and about and see something cool in an ad or something I'd rather scan it. I think it just has to do with the situation.

I could have used that just the other day. Instead I stood at a rack of pants talking to the docker folks on the phone trying to find the colors/sizes for certain styles. A quick scan on the droidx would have had me directly to the website, drilled down to the correct page, avoiding all the potential wrong button pushes on smartphones.

A few years ago some vendors tagged ads with text keys [eight digit numbers to a text line] which then dumped the same thing. It might be a more simple alternative.

Text 12345678 to xxxxx for a link to more information.
