Quiting Smoking

Open to any suggestions and or shared experiences with quiting smoking: lets hear it all :

I been smoking for 23 years the day i quit i was up to 2 packs a day spending $300 plus a month on ciggs and this is the last 10 days of events for me lets hear your story.

Day 1. sick sick sick empty inside cant explain just dont feel good something is missing
Day 2. Dry heaves, swollen throat, nausea, exhausted very tired cant focus world is a blur
Day 3. emotionally distraught cant focus tired very irritable numbness and tingling in different parts of the body
Day 4. Die everything Must Die, severe road rage could tear off the doors and move walls
Day 5. not bad little tired , little bit of irritation numbness at times and little tingling
Day 6. we can do this its not that bad minor headaches
Day 7. headaches off and on but manageable
Day 8. Urges from hell oh my every hour on the hour everything reminds me of a cig.
Day 9. is there enough food in this world to keep me happy everything taste different and better im starved i havent ate a normal meal in a week
Day 10. not a single craving today but its only half over i will defeat this . and my jeep is going to be fricken amazing with all the extra money im going to have.

Hang in there, you can do it!

I never took up the habit. In HS I was on the cross country team and it wasn't a good idea to smoke at the time. After that I just never had the desire to start.

Again, stick with it. That extra $300/mo can buy lots of Jeep goodies.

Thanks man, i started in high school with copenhagen cuz we were cool lol which turned to ciggs and cigars and ive done both for years actually started chewing 28 years ago before i went to ciggs and cigars and snuff............ im hell bent to beat it cold turkey no chew, snuff, nicotine at all and let me tell ya its a whole new world with sense of taste and smell

I smoked for better than 30 years and on my last day I was at 3 packs/day. Yes, three. I had it mind that I wanted to quit and just put them down, no scaled approach to cutting back, no patch or gum, just quit. For three days I wanted one but held on. I never turned in to a turd or was mean to anyone. After that I was good.

That was 12 years ago.

Subscribed. My quit day is the 28th. Hang in there! Gotta do it for the kids and extra $$$$. I have a calendar and put $5 a day down each day. At certain amounts i circled the day and wrote what I will buy as a reward to myself! Ive smoked for 16 years, time to give it up.

Very impressive. You will kick your self in the ass so bad if you turn back now. You have clearly made it through the worst of it all.
From what I understand, you have made it through the physical withdrawals and now it's the mental aspect left. You sound like a pretty strong guy to have done it this way, no need to look back now.
CONGRATS! Just think, you are now a role model to someone else who would like to quit.

t hanks all and i must say i have a whole new appreciation for those who have had drug addictions and need to be checked in for clean up and it def. helps knowing the stories of others who have done this im not looking for recognition as i have done nothing more than taken the initiative to grow a pair just like hearing what others have experienced in this process

It helps if you really WANT to quit.
I went cold turkey 4 years ago - my only regret is I didn't do it sooner.

It's funny - you start measuring quit time in days, then weeks, months and now I measure in years

I quit 19 years ago, after numerous attempts. The thing that helped me was, when I was reading up on quitting, the author referred to the withdrawal symptoms as "discomfort". I thought, sh*t, I can handle a little discomfort, and did. It's weird, but I kept thinking of that withdrawal "ache", as just a little discomfort, and it really helped. Just remember to NEVER try one again. Your one puff away from being addicted all over again.

My dad just turned 56. He didn't have a smoking problem, instead he had a drinking problem. He drank for ~40 years. When I say drank, I'm talking over a 12pack a day. Drank it like it was water and he was in the desert. Everywhere we went, he had a beer. Football game? Beer. DRIVING? Beer. Bringing his 12 year old son(me) out to play golf? Beer. Cooking? Beer. Cutting grass? Yep. You guessed. Beer. Certainly this last part shouldn't be very surprising to you guys. My sister had her first child at the age of 16. Instead of being there for her, where was he? F'ing wasted. He was a drunk while his first grandchild was being born. You can see his face red as a tomato.

Notice I everything is past tense. On April 4th my dad had a stroke. At the age of 56. The man was in the hospital for three and a half months. He was wheelchair bound, couldn't move/feel the left side of his body. With us (me, my mom, and my sister) bringing him to doctors appointment after appointment, and back and fourth to months of rehab, he is able to limp around with a cane. He has tried to drink twice since. Both times were unsuccessful.

Thought I'd share that.

Put the money you're saving in a glass jar or gallon jug so you can see the money you're wasting. Your body starts to heal just 8 HOURS after your last cigg!!! Good luck! Start working out, exercise will help tremendously!

Best of luck to you. You can do it. I quit Cope after 10+ years the first of this year. I was up to dang near 2 cans a day.

I went thru the same thing you did. I remember the numbness, throbbing & tingling of my bottom lip & tongue the worst. Freeked me smooth out. I was ready to kill by the 4th day. If you can make it to 2 weeks, you've got it whipped.

I did the chewing gum method. It worked for me.

The initial part is the hardest, gets easier every day.

I started smoking in grade 9, and smoked for 6 years or so. Finally decided to quit before I got too old, knew it would only get harder the longer I waited.

one thing that helped me was to have something to keep in fingers or mouth, toothpick worked well.

Once I was sure I was not going to ever smoke again, I bought myself a mountain bike.

My wife had smoked longer than we have been married (24 years) and a few years ago she tried that Chantix crap. Worked until she got around other smokers. January 2012 she went to one of those hypnosis seminars. We both were skeptical, but she figured "why not?!", hasn't touched a cigarette since. I never would have believed it if I hadn't seen it. She had the urge for one a while at first, but the smell was suddenly a huge turn-off. The house smells better, cars, clothes, smoochin'. So with that, I highly recommend hypnosis. Spend $60 to save hundreds or even thousands.

today is day 14 im still smoke free it does smell bad when im around others still have cravings though hope they pass soon still feel like i could pick up a pack ya know as far as KG4kpg hypnosis i dont know man id be to afraid of them making me think i need to pic my ass or scratch my nuts every time i want a cig or something stupid .......... the boys would be pretty raw ya know

this past year i've been good. i recently bought a pack this past weekend (its been over a year since i purchased a pack) ... it was for my wheeling trip it was gone after a day w/ the help of other smokers. yesterday i purchased another pack while waiting to get my oil change done. i threw the remainder in the trash can today (about 15) because i don't want to make it a habit.

thats been the most i ever smoked in over a year.

it takes me 3 days. first day is tough since its applied to your daily routine.
2nd day is tougher...but just keep yourself occupied. if you feel the urge to smoke, do something productive. for me, video games or searching random stuff in the computer helps.
the 3rd day will ease up and if you can go for 3 days, i'd say you have a better chance of quitting.

I told here since it worked, I was going to go watch one from behind the cutain to see what he does so I can make her walk around the mall on all fours, or cluck, or...well, the sky's the limit.

dang, its hard... I smoked for 25 years this year. Last year, I quit. Dropped 'em and did the lozenges for about a week and I was good for almost 5 months. Then started back up and actually smoke a little more now than I did before I quit. Every one I have, I think of quiting and its just got me.

Good luck to you sir. I smoked for 14 years and as of yesterday, I've been smoke free for 2 years.

In my experience, the first month just sucks. No way around it. I don't know how many times I tried to quit and failed after a few weeks. The important thing is to keep trying. Once you make it through the first month, it just keeps getting easier. Your motivation is still high and you're constantly impressed by each day you made it without smoking.

Then you hit the 4 month or so mark..the novelty and motivation have kinda worn off a bit, and one night you're hanging out with some friends that smoke and you tend to forget why you quit in the first place. You think, "it's been four months..one can't hurt?!" And then 3 weeks later you're buying packs again. If you can make it through this stage, you're laughing. I failed at this stage a few times too. Again, the important thing is that you keep on trying.

It ain't easy so congrats on making it this far. Keep tuffin er out, and one day soon you'll look back at this as one of the greatest accomplishments of your life.

i must say i still woke up this morning and first thought in my mind was ciggy last night i poured my first jack on the rocks since i quit just about drove me over the edge without my cigar to dip

I quit smoking 23 days ago. I am 23 days Smoke Free. I was up to a pack a day and I have been smoking for 8 years.

I have to say, the way I did it, I used the prescription Chantix. It doesn't contain nicotine, and was able to keep me from having withdrawals or getting sick. Chantix is a 12 week 2 pills a day program. It is an anti-depressant that they actually found blocks the nicotine from getting into your brain while keeping you happy. The first week you smoke while taking the pill. You think you are still smoking but no nicotine is getting to your brain, so by day 8 when you don't smoke a cigarette, you no longer have the nicotine in your system intensifying the cravings. I took the pill for 2.5 weeks, and haven't taken it since and don't need it now. The physical cravings are gone, now it is just breaking old habits like going outside to smoke after dinner or after "fun time" (that's right I do it like the french!). I find most days I don't even think about it!

If you or anyone on here needs a quitting partner to help them quit, just holler! They say it is easier to quit when you have someone to talk to, I know I would just post randomly how many days I was smoke free and the responses I got telling me good job and how proud of me they were kept me from picking up a smoke!

I know days 1-14 are the hardest days ever, Hell even with my pills, day 19, I was ready to murder everybody...why? Because they were breathing wrong! But now I am ok, I got stuff like alcohol and other smokers out of the way early. Day 4 of not smoking, I hosted the largest gathering of Jeeps in my state, Everyone wanted to say hi to me, but a lot are smokers. I let them say hi while they are smoking, wasn't easy, the craving was there. Then afterwards, we had an after party at my house, I drank a whole lot of whiskey, I almost gave up quitting! But alas I am still here. Last night I sat at home and watched the baseball game, Drank a 6 pack of cider, this would be when I would light up a cigar or cigarette in the man cave.

Thought never even crossed my mind.

It does get a little easier.

i hope it gets easier, i just need to learn how to mellow dropped the F bomb 4 times in a meeting this morning after the meeting boss pulled me aside are you still trying to quite? ummm no im still cold turkey and havent had any nicotine in the last 16 days. he told me mayby u should find a new approach lol i said ill work on that. and honestly it is getting easier but some things stress words actions moments cant nail it down just set me into a tensed state and im still not sure how to respond and or act when those moments happen outside of dropping the fbomb 4 times in a meeting lol

Yep, I just got past that stage! It does get easier (my wife is quitting cold turkey with me, she smoked less than me, so I needed the prescription to help and boy did it)


Day 16, that is an accomplishment! You are almost free and clear man! Keep it up, and think of it like this next time you want to smoke. Take a deep breath and ask yourself, do you want to have to go through what you have in the last 16 days again? Because if you smoke one cig, youll be starting all over again!

I'm right here with ya! I'm not someone who quit 5 years ago. I quit October 2nd, 2013. That was day 1 of 0 smokes. I will be 30 days smoke free in my birthday, 2 things to celebrate

Well, I lost a good-friend heavy-smoker to Lung Cancer, and I miss him a lot, I wish he lived longer, he was the Best Teacher in School, we all miss him dearly.
Do it for your Family, and do it for us, you sound like a Great and Honest Person and Friend, we will appreciate that you stay in this Forum much longer.
One of this days, if you don`t quit, your lungs are going to get sick and will not be able to recover, are you going to regret it like our friend did ?
Today, is the day you quit, if you really want to live longer, there is no other way around it, there is no other choice. With respect, and best wishes, a friend.

Day 16, that is an accomplishment! You are almost free and clear man! Keep it up, and think of it like this next time you want to smoke. I'm right here with ya! I'm not someone who quit 5 years ago. I quit October 2nd, 2013. That was day 1 of 0 smokes. I will be 30 days smoke free in my birthday, 2 things to celebrate
so did you go through a spending faze last week bored not knowing what to do with myself i bought a new 30-06 BDL this week i ordered a green mountain pellet grill ..... lol side note: i needed a new grill my old gas weber was 15 years old and rebuilt 3 times it was shot )

Also a good reason! My 5 year old came to me and told me how I should stop smoking, its bad for me, and that he didn't want me turning out like Pops. Pops was my grandfather who we lost to smoking this year. He said this, and it broke my heart. I dropped my head into my hands amd literally cried. When I picked my head up, I knew what I was going to do. Its not easy, but extremely worth it

Yep! Spending and eating! Its all I did! Still eating, but I managed to get a second job where I will work from home, so that has me busy now preparing.

I went through the phase of feeling like life was so boring. Thay you should maybe just go to bed hoping tomorrow was easier. I remember that. It was rough. But as of now, I don't even think about that cigarette or how boring my life is without one.
