Former professional wrestler Randy "Macho Man" Savage was killed today when he crashed head-on into a tree, possibly after having a heart attack.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Savage, 58, whose real name is Randy Poffo, was killed after losing control of his Jeep Wrangler and crashing into a tree. Barbara Poffo, 56, his wife, was a passenger and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with minor injuries.
The website of his brother, Lanny Poffo – also a former pro wrestler – says: "In Loving Memory, Randy Mario Poffo, Nov. 15, 1952 - May 20, 2011."
According to TMZ, Lanny Poffo said Savage had a heart attack while driving.
Hulk Hogan, a longtime nemesis of Savage's, expressed condolences on his Twitter account.
"I just pray that Randy's happy and in a better place and we miss him," Hogan wrote. "We miss him a lot. I feel horrible about the ten years of having no communication. This is a tough one."
"He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit," Hogan said.
According to the Highway Patrol, Savage was driving a 2009 Jeep Wrangler west on Park Boulevard when, just west of 113th Street, he lost control of the vehicle. The Wrangler went over the median, across the eastbound lanes and hopped the curb before crashing head-on into the tree at about 9:25 a.m.
Savage was taken to Largo Medical Center, where he died, according to the FHP report. He "may have suffered a medical event; however, this cannot be confirmed until an autopsy is performed," according to a prepared statement by the patrol.
