Re: Tony Stewart

Tony Stewart and Sprint Cars -
Many opinions have been posted on this subject and most have been posted by people who have never even sat in a race car let alone driven one in competition. I have.
Even though emotions and adrenaline run wild when in competition a mature driver will refrain from doing stupid things like exiting his car while other cars are still running on the track unless of course its on fire.
Bumping and banging is inevitable especially on a dirt track although sprint cars try to avoid this because it can potentially put them out of the race. Not so much on fendered stock cars.
NO ONE wants to tear up his race car they are expensive and time consuming to build.
Also NO ONE wants to hurt his competitors its bad for PR and for business and racing is a business.
Visibility in a sprint car is very limited at best especially out of the right hand side due to the front and rear wing , Tony probably didn't even see him in his black fire suit.
And finally everyone who has put on a fire suit, helmet and strapped them selves in a race car knows that it is a dangerous sport and that you may die doing it. I was lucky that in 30 years of racing many types of race cars I never even got a scratch or a bruise. That was in part because I kept my head.
Tony isn't one of my favorite drivers but I do have a lot of respect for drivers that do what he does and has that type of passion. Good Luck Tony I hope you can get past this and move on.

passion and being hot headed are two totally different things. No way do I think he meant to hit the other driver, just to intimidate him. So sad for everyone involved.

Back in the day Tony and Kurt Bush were among NASCARS hot heads.
Since then they have aged and matured. Tony is now a team owner and understands the business side of racing. The accident that spun out Ward was not intentional sprint cars are not made to do that. I have heard that Steward hit the throttle before Ward was struck that could be true because of the fact that you do a lot of your steering in a sprint car with the throttle. It was more than likely a last minute attempt to avoid hitting the young man. Driving a sprint car is an experience you will never forget , its a 800 horse power go kart. Everyone who drives one knows that its no place to be a hot head.

He should have did what Tony did last year. Threw his helmet at him as he passed by....and not stand in front of a car. Then again from what I saw Tony just took the corner much better than he did and it looked to me like the spin out was more the kid's fault.

Yeah. I'm sure he intentionally ran him over in front of a crowd and while being recorded. People are morons.

It's a crappy situation. Why these drivers get out of their cars to show their anger at another driver is beyond me! Even at caution speed a cars going to win.
It sucks that this kid lost his life and Tony is going to have to live with the fact that he did it for the rest of his. Yes Stewart has a temper but I don't belive it was intentional. It's total crap that the media keeps talking about said temper.
I remember being at Martinsville and Schrader got out of his wrecked truck, walked across the track to confront another driver passing by. I understand heat of the moment but stay in the damn car unless it's on fire or safety crew is there.

If you watch the Deadspin video of it you can see the kid clearly hit the wall with his outside tire. Had Tony clipped the kids inside front it woulda pushed the rear of the car in towards the track and the front towards the wall. plus the outside tire is clearly flat.

Imo he tried to dust him or intimidate him but then "whoopsie!"
Sounds like he hit the gas. Hard to prove though.
For Tony's sake there better not be any better video out there.
I think he'll be fine because he's Tony Stewart.

The gas is the only way to steer a sprint car

Your right! It was Kevin who intentionally got out of his car!:He knows better than to do that but he chose to risk his life as well as risking the safety of others! Unless that car is on fire or you are in immediate danger by staying put you are supposed to stay in in the car until the crew safely removes you and your car from the track! Kevin should have waited to deal with Tony in the pits period. But his choice has now changed the life if Tony most importantly as well as the lives of his own family and friends. Its too bad this happened and I bet there will be some changes atbthe future drivers meetings before the races. Tony will never be the same mentally with this in the back of his mind. He didnt deserve it!

It bugs the crap out of me that people keep saying that Tony did something intensional because he's a hot head. But the fact is that Tony had nothing to be upset at Kevin about, period. Why is his temperament even brought up.

So therefore no intent.
And yes I'm a huge Stewart fan but that has nothing to do with my opinion of the incident.

I believe that it is a tragic incident and Stewart did what he could to avoid hitting Kevin. I hate to say it but Kevin is at fault.
Even the drive behind Stewart said there was nothing he could have done. And the drive in front of Stewart said he saw Kevin at the last second and almost hit him, and he was blocking Stewart's veiw.

Its nothing more then a tragic incident, note I did not say accident because this could have been easily avoided.
Just my .02

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by this tragedy.

Tony Stewart is more of a victim because there was nothing he could have done and has to live with it the rest of his life.

I hate to say it, but Kevin Ward Jr committed suicide. Walking into a line of race cars pitching a hissy fit is going to ACCOMPLISH NOTHING but get you killed.

AS an infield track paramedic at a NASCAR superspeedway, rule #1 is to not get out of the car until the safety teams are on-scene and safety team members are taught Rule #1 is don't turn your back to traffic
