I think they are good for something that you are going to use often or every day. For long term items that you wont use often they are a waste as they are usually dead when you go to use them. We use the rechargeables here at work everyday and they are well worth it. The trick is to keep a set on the charger and change them out often. If you leave them lay around dead they dont last long.

Energizer makes a 15 minute charger. It's worth the investment. I also use Rayovac batteries with no complaints. They're a lot cheaper.

I use Sanyo Eneloops in my DSLR flash and mouse; have them in AA and AAA. They're available at Costco, and Amazon as well. They're NiMH, and seem hold charge quite well compared to 'normal' rechargeables.
