Rental Cars..

We are planning a trip for over Christmas and we are going to fly for a change, haven't needed to rent a car in quite awhile. Anybody here have recent experience (good or bad) with the service they provide and does anyone know where I can get a good deal? I'll probably want something full size, so rent-a-kart is out of the question!

You get a discount with Hertz if you have AAA, never used that part of my membership though.

I work for a company that deals with almost all of the major rental car companies, as part of our buisness. Most of them are the same, and use the same type of vehicles. Rates will be pretty close to each other with most of the major companies. Some offer "special services" like GPS at additional cost, some use satalite radio more than others etc.

In my experience, Budget rental car, reserved off the internet, will give you the best deal.. sometimes by a fair amount too. They don't use the "normal" rental cars, but if you ask me its a good thing. Were most companies will use, say, G6s/fusion/sebring etc, budget may give you a Mazda 6 or a VW. They do carry the usual rental car fleet, but they have a much larger selection, and are not as committed to the big 3 because of the turn back system as the other major companies.

Almost all of the major rental car companies will allow you to request a certain kind of vehicle in the class that you are paying for, if they aren't completely sold out and have one available. After you make the reservation online, just shoot them a call and have them put that request in the computer. Make sure you ask the counter person nicely when you get there also, sometimes they over look the special notes on the computer

Walk the car REAL good when you get it, before you drive it away. They will charge you for damage, weather it was there before or not, if its not documented before you leave with it.

EDIT: Almost forgot. If you are under 25 years old, there will be a fee per day, with any of the companies. Usually its an additional 25 bucks per day, if you are 21-24.

I actually had a car rental place call me about any repairs done to a certain type of vehicle once. A customer thought he was getting away with having a repair done without them finding out he was in an accident but he repaired some prior damage at the same time. I would have loved to hear that conversation when they called him

Right now my wife is in Reno renting a car, we need to replace or re-rent a car every 3 weeks because thats all State Farm will cover a rental. So every 3 weeks I go to Orbits and do the rental. As we speak she is renting a 4x4 Jeep Liberty for less that $18.00 a day, the tinny little cars are about $45.00 a day. Do your home work & be open to all the vehicles they offer for the best rental rate. Also these rates don't seem to get any better by booking in advance for some reason. One more, if you can, avoid renting your car from the Airport location, the cities tax rate and other fees are charged at the Airport location, try to rent off site, somewhere in the town you are visiting, we are saving about $100. a week by doing this.

We get that a lot... I do appraisals for lease returns/repossessions, but my job with my current company before I switched to this current position, was inspecting the rental car turn backs. You would be surprised how many times we got some crappy joe schmoe repair that the rental account didn't have a disclosure for

Anyone know if any rental car companies in Florida rent Wranglers? I wouldn't mind trying out a new JK for a week!

Just get the additional insurance and see how high you can launch it before you take it back.

...be sure a video camera is involved.

NICE!! I hope he got the damage waiver! I might have to give that some thought! The rental agencies in the tampa area don't seem to stock JKs, the closest they have seems to be a Liberty, which aint all that close!

Posted a thread on my clubs board and somebody came up with this
http://www.thrifty.com/Local/OurCars...cationCode=CLW
This is about 30mins west of the Tampa Airport. I tried a couple of dates and came up not avail, might want to call them. Some others had interesting ideas also. PM me if you want the link to that thread.
