Route 66

I have recently suffered two quite severe heart attacks. It tends to make you focus and realise how easily life can be taken away from you.

I now realise that I still have a few things on my bucket list of stuff to do before I die. One of them is to drive a Wrangle along the full length of the old Route 66.

Can any of my American friends recommend a company or organisation that may be able to assist me in this venture? Bear in mind that I live in England, sobS wouldn't be using my own TJ.

If you haven't already found it, here is a good start The Mother Road: Historic Route 66

Yeah, I had seen that thanks. There are a few English travel companies that arrange these things, but I think I could probably get a better deal from a US based outfit and then just sort my own flights.

I have no experience with any of them, but a quick google search turned up many agencies that have Route 66 tours. If I were in your shoes, I'd most likely just fly into Chicago, rent a car and buy a map, and start driving! Look me up when you come through Missouri, Route 66 runs through the town I live in

I've pedaled most of Route 66 but never driven it. I live less than 1 mile off the original Route 66 near St. Louis, Missouri.

If you drive the original route send me a PM on when you'll be passing through the area and I'll treat you to dinner at a local restaurant that was booming when Route 66 was the main thoroughfare through town and is still open. The bordellos behind the restaurant are no longer in business.

Met some folks from Australia once who every year fly over, rent a classic rag-top Mustang, and drive the route. I'd say get a good map, get a car, pick a start date and enjoy. Stop to see the sights along the way and just walk-in to whatever hotel you prefer when you decide to stop. Of course, that could make it a couple weeks long but who cares. Wish I could do it.
